Working Out with Bob the Drag Queen

Nick Smith | August 1, 2026

My health and wellness journey is continuing and I’m dragging my friends along too. Bob has graciously decided to help me hit the gym and see if I can do some upper body workouts. Let’s just say I struggled…

4:52 that’s also me doing arm workouts 😅. You gotta start somewhere. I think because very tall people don’t gain weight easily, they never had to workout. It’s good Nick is getting healthier

Hi Nick! Your content has honestly been so healing for me. I’ve always joked that I have a bit of a “Squidward build” — long arms, questionable upper body strength, but I don’t dream of labor soooo 💅 — and it’s made me feel self-conscious at times.

But watching you move with so much GRACE and confidence has been really inspiring. It’s helped me see that bodies like mine are still strong, capable, and worth showing up for.

Also, it’s so wonderful seeing how your friends (especially Bob!) creating such a safe and educational space for you to learn — I really hope to find something like that too.

Thank you for making trying new things feel a lot less scary 🤍

Nick, as a physio, my advice to you would be:

    1) get into of a good rythm of being active and exercising 2-3 times a week.
You are not used to being active and it's very easy to convince yourself to just skip a day in the beginning.
If you are sore from a workout with a buddy who is in a completely different place in their workout journey than you, it's very easy to convince your self to skip your own planned workout. Support is great but following someone elses program that is miles above your level is only going to leave you defeated and sore for days. (NO shade to Bob or Matheo, they are both so supportive)

    2) Your choice of doing pilates, is a great choice for a beginner. You'll work on your basic core stability and build general strenght in your arms and legs by holding them out from your body in various positions. Keep at it 😊

    3) If you want to go to a gym and do strenght training, consider only using machines in the beginning. It will help you to keep a good technique because the movement is locked in a certain position. It will also remove the issue of balance and stability around your joints while working out your muscles. I would also recommend to choose the machines that workout more than one muscle, so compound exercises. Squats is king here, but look around the gym to find other machines that work out several muscles in your upperbody, core and lowerbody. You need functionality not bulging biceps
You could start out by doing 10 repetions without weight, or lowest weight just to get into the movement of the exercise and how you activate your muscles to do the particular exercise. After that add only a little extra weight. You should just be able to do 3×10 with only a little extra effort on the last 2-3 repetions. You can always add more weight futher down the line.
Going full steam ahead from the very beginning is only going to leave you sore and prone to either give up or make excuses about not needing to work out.
    Remember, you are a beginner!

Also remember that your focus is on better health not massive muscles, so start small and find a good rythm. Even a little bit is better than nothing at all. And you can always add extra workouts/weight/exercises on down the line if you want.

Hope this is usefull🙂 good luck and keep at it💪

8:16 GREAT JOB taking care of yourselves and pushing yourselves!! One Note. Do not pick up weights from that position. Too much pressure on the shoulders and elbows in a bad way. Have them already in your hands when you lay back. The NASM CPT in me had to say that. BUT KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!
