The Jingle Dress Dance is one of the most popular powwow dance styles, instantly recognizable by the distinctive sound of metal cones, or ziibaaska’iganan, attached to the dancer’s dress. Originating in the early 1900s with the Mille Lacs Band of the Ojibwe, the dance began as a healing ceremony inspired by a vision and gained wider prominence during the 1920s, particularly amid hardship such as the 1918 flu pandemic and restrictions on ceremonial dancing. Today, it is performed by women and girls across Native American and First Nations communities, honoring its roots as a powerful symbol of healing, resilience, and cultural continuity.
