Wolves in the heart of Voyageurs National Park

Voyageurs Wolf Project | April 9, 2026

A fantastic glimpse of wolves (and a few other wild creatures) that occupy the most remote portion of Voyageurs National Park, the expansive and wild Kabetogama Peninsula.

This camera was set at the nexus of 3 of the packs in this region—Mithrandir, Nashata, and Listening Point— last winter and you can see all 3 packs using the trail this camera was set-on.

The saga of the wolf packs that occupy the Kabetogama Peninsula has provided fascinating insight into the flexible and ever-changing nature of wolf pack dynamics, pack structure, and territorial behavior.

Wolf packs in places like Minnesota, where packs are generally small, are generally considered to have a “simple” social structure—a breeding pair and their offspring.

However, over the past handful of years, we have documented a slew of surprising and unanticipated changes in the social structure of the packs in this area.

These include packs swapping breeding individuals, young wolves from one pack moving to another, a mother and daughter forming competing packs but effectively sharing a territory, a wolf who was the breeding male of 3 packs in the area over a 3 year period (i.e., he swapped packs every year), and so on.

And interestingly, the event that initiated all of these changes: the death of the breeding male of the Nashata Pack.
