Variety | January 29, 2026

Alice Brooks, the cinemographer of John Chu’s ‘Wicked’ and ‘Wicked: For Good,’ breaks down why she always shot Ariana Grande’s Galinda & Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba on 65mm and 70mm lenses, how she used specific colors for each character, and how she developed custom 1.3x anamorphic lenses for the film.

it's a shame she lighted every scene so terribly, so washed out, such a dismal failure to replicate the jewel-like colors of the Wizard of Oz….totally awful

on the conversation of "hands", the first shot of Elphaba and Glinda is when Glinda is thinking back after being question if she was Elphaba's friend. Its at the ballroom of the back of their fingers touching, their first actual touch of friendship.

whose idea was it to mute and decontrast all these colors tho, cause theres a lot of beautiful and great decisions otherwise but its totally ruined by the color grade or lack of color grade not sure which it is

She should have been Oscar nominated the first time and I Hope she will for the second. Her work is remarkable and outstanding. 💚🩷 you Alice.

Such a beautiful interview, I love the level of detail she was able to offer in this exchange. Such valuable information on the process, creative direction, reasoning for different decisions around image making, and the level of care made on set and the willingness to embrace flexibility in order to best serve the story. Marvelous work
