Why You Should Watch the Movie Straight Jacket, Hollywood’s Lost Gay Rom-Com

In 2004, I saw a movie that would occupy my thoughts for the next 20 years. It was called Straight Jacket, and it asked what would happen if Rock Hudson’s life story was told as though it was a Rock Hudson film. I thought Straight Jacket was destined to become a queer camp classic, but instead it just … vanished. And for two decades I wondered why — but now we finally have some answers. This is the story of Straight Jacket: the struggle to get it made, why it mysteriously vanished, and how a mid-century gay romance is poised for a triumphant return.

Does anyone else feel the meaning of R.E.M's "Losing My Religion" is unrequited gay love for a straight male friend? "Oh no, I've said too much; I haven't said enough"

why on. Earth do people read or listen to so called. Critics. Individuals should be their own critic.jf you watch or read something it’s you that knows whether you like or dislike anything.

I’m a hetero male, in my 40s. Not much interest in show business. But I have been glued to your videos since I’ve discovered them. Can’t say I know why, but I am thoroughly entertained. Great work sir!

I was trying to figure out why I recognized the name Jack Plotnick, and it was because he played the deputy mayor on BTVS. He was also on "Criminal Minds" and "Supernatural."

    Richard is an amazing human!
"I had this money sitting around that I could make a movie with I understand it's a very privileged position to be in. At least people can take satisfaction in that I did something stupid with it and lost it all"
is such a badass comment I wish I could be just half as cool, and hope he continues to write these kinds of stories, they are so important to be heard!
I am definitely going to share this film with friends!

I still find it incredibly hypocritical that the US touts itself as the land of the free, but thinking that a socialist republic could be a better system or loving someone of the same gender could land you in jail…

This was such a good movie, thank you for making this video! A lot of movies I watch are by Strand, good thing they saved this.

Friends and Family is also a great movie that you mentioned, such a tight and progressive script despite the characters not kissing (would love to know why). Hopefully you'll make more videos about these movies.

@1:39 You mentioned "Spin City" and queer characters. It needs to be said, "Spin City" went an extra step by being one of the first long running big shows to a have a gay black male character.

I always thought the episode where they're stuck in the steam room, and trying to get this one old guys club the Mayor is a member of to not look as "only for men" things. At one point Michael J Fox gets the black character to come in, and then flash forward, everyone's laughing and having a good time, and I think the black guy said something to the effect of "We weren't sure how you'd react to a gay man." And then one of the older club members was like: "Are you kidding? We've known <some other old guy there>'s been gay since <decades before, back when it was still illegal to not be straight>!" (Pardon all the paraphrasing. I'm middle aged, and THC, CTE, and AGE are getting to me and my memory.)

21:00 I've seen this play! It was in 2004 and I'd been ushering as a volunteer for years by that date. I recall a few scenes, notably one in which a character has been outed and walks in wearing a yellow shirt. He jokes that the color is so the egg splatters don't show up as much. When another character asks what having sex with a straight woman is like, he makes the complaint about her being a total bottom.

I have wondered what happened to this movie! I saw it as the Opening Night Premiere at the Miami G&L Film Festival in 2004. Every time I saw Matt Letscher in anything subsequent to that (Good Morning Miami and The New Adventures of Old Christine), I flashed back to this movie, whose title I couldn't recall. I thought maybe it was something else. Now I know. Thank you.

I second I heard "Republican tax attorney" and "former exxecutive at FOX". well, fraud by funneling money to themselves came as no surprise. It also explains why some of these gay media companies I so loved (like PlanetOut) just vanished or became a shell of themselves. Seems like they were on a covert mission to destroy the gay media presence the community worked so hard to build by buying them out and deliberately running them into the ground by amassing so much debt. Word to the wise: ALWAYS go with the respected company and not some startup promising the Moon.

How does Matt maintain his charm and humor through a Hello Fresh ad read? I do not want this product, but appreciate him through the whole video nevertheless – and if ads are unavoidable it's fun to see him play with them.
