Why you can’t buy Dasani water in Britain

Tom Scott | July 13, 2026

Coca-Cola’s brand of bottled water, Dasani, was a flop in the UK after the public realised it was just filtered tap water. But the story’s a bit more complicated than it might seem. | Drinking Dasani with Ashens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6VhcpwFZJM

The problem with a lot of water in the UK isn't the water it's what it cones through!

A lot of house pipes are old and so e are metallic. And that doesn't help the taste.

I used to love my dasani water, when I had to buy water, because my local dadani was from nyc tap water and it NYC is famously good, clean, water.

American water is actually very good, overall. Water with a high sulfur content is not bad for you. It's not particularly pleasing to the palate but that's not to say the water is actually harmful. I'm sure someone will chime in to comment about lead pipes, but I am referring to the water itself and not the historical use of lead in plumbing systems.

@TomScottGo enjoyed the video but as you walked and I saw refuge on repeat seemed to be trash everywhere. I was thinking why not a video about cleaning up as you walk and talk instead of thumping on a retro bottle.

It is about time England cleaned their water up. When I was there in the 90s, there were always stuff floating in the tap water. And we had to buy water purifier jugs. Every so oftenn, we were told to boil the water for safety reasons by the authorities. And you couldn't swim in a canal because it was so dirty. Did they clean the canals up too?

Am I the only one who wished he would make more long form content like this? I love this guy's videos, but sometimes I like having longer videos to put on and be able to focus too vs a ton of short form videos I have to constantly change my attention span to switch between

Dasani was also launched here in Argentina but retired after allegations of contamination. Not sure if they also screwed up here, or Coca-cola decided to retire it after the bad press from the British mishap. Either way, perception of the public was that Dasani was contaminated.
Similarly, Coca-cola launched a yerba mate soda in Argentina around those same years, called Nativa. Such drinks were (and are) very popular in nearby Paraguay and Brazil, there was a huge marketing campaign and I remember everybody enthusiastic about buying it. It tasted horrible and was fairly expensive, a complete flop, it disappeared in less than a year.

you know what would be an interesting statistic? how much of earth is safe to drink and eat from? and what is the percentage of natural hazard to man made hazard? and how much of that has made life more hazardous as compared to the earth before?
