Why Wichita Lineman was recorded before it was finished

David Hartley | October 28, 2025

Wichita Lineman is often considered one of the greatest songs ever written, but when Jimmy Webb gave it to Glen Campbell to record, it wasn’t finished.

You've got a wrong chord at 3:03. It's an A chord, not G. You neglected to mention that Glen Campbell had to bring a bunch of guys over to Jimmy Webb's place in order to haul that huge Organ to the studio just to record that sound effect.

I'm what you might call a "coulda been". However, I do have a story about this song that is one of my favorite memories. In 1968 I was an up and coming 17 year old folk singer in the LA scene with an agent from Universal Studios. My agent took me took me to Capital Records when Mr. Campbell was recording the vocals for this song. I somehow ended up standing next to him for a couple of hours in total awe. I was too shy say anything and, of course, he was working. But I will not forget that day ever.

I love this song so much. I never knew the history. Had no idea that the "telegraph wire" sound was from an organ! Fascinating that the song was incomplete, but so perfect. Thank you!

4:52 That guitar solo sounds a lot like the opening to the TV show "Twin Peaks."
I LOVE the sound of that guitar, but I've never heard it anywhere else but Twin Peaks and Wichita Lineman. Why is that?
