Why The War on Drugs Is a Huge Failure

Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell | September 22, 2025

The war against drugs has been a terrible disaster for everybody involved. Why? And can we do something differently?

I kinda hate how charges like being intoxicated and possessing drugs ruin people's lives.
    Basically the government said
"Drugs could ruin your life, so we're gonna lock you up for ten years and ruin your life and chances of employment and you'll end up homeless and an addict all over again until we arrest you for being homeless and addicted to drugs!"
Like if it's distribution of drugs, or doing something horrible to someone while under the influence, yeah, send them to prison.
But if it's just "Hey this guy is doing drugs" then get them help and they can become a productive and relatively healthy member of society
Cause the prison system in the US is more focused on punishment than reform.

Switzerland proved harm reduction works. Free centers reduced crime and overdose deaths. But politicians prefer looking "tough" over solving problems. People die for their image.

Minds of lower development think that society is improved by acting more in favor of the war on drugs. They confuse improvement of society with whatever is personally good for them and their tribe. They don’t understand that what makes society bad is the war on drugs, and their war on drugs specifically. They are so caught up in the war on drugs they think that if just more of their war on drugs gets actualized the world will be fixed. And everyone is operating under this mistaken notion. It doesn’t occur to them that to create a better society everyone has to sacrifice, including them, including you. What are you willing to personally sacrifice to improve society? That’s the issue. That’s why good society is hard. If the war on drugs produced a good society, we would be living in paradise. The war on drugs corrodes the good society that selflessness has built.

This is ridiculous… trying to stop drug trade is what causes violence and ODs?? Love how you blame people trying to stop it and not the people who WILLINGLY use them.

drug prohibition is a uniquely stupid american solution…. We REALLY need to wake up and realize that everywhere else in the world does this better than us and accept that we are wasting so much treasure for absolutely nothing. It is a GUARANTEE that in a few more years of wasting this money on this that we will not be able to afford to solve real problems like paving streets or fighting real crime.

Let's not forget he did that because of racism. Kissinger admitted they were looking at how to arrest people of color without making it look racist. They found the way by pursuing poor people that statistically take more drugs, and it so happens that the poorest one are people of color! This was a jackpot for the Nixon administration. Nixon was also known for the Waterloo scandal, and the way he shut down cybersyn in Chile in 1973.

For most of history no state pretended to have the power to decide which substances were 'permitted.' Competent adults made their own choices and life went on. The war on drugs is an excuse by modern states to give themselves massive power.

Even the 11th standard economics tells us about the price and demand relationship, when the price goes up, demand declines, but it doesn't work on products like alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, etc (addictive products). The demand is not affected by the price. A smoker is gonna smoke, whether a cigarette costs 5rs or 50rs.

I had to do my own research in this for college, so I can confirm everything in this is correct. Though what you don’t know is that the war on drugs is still going on.

I am happy that this has
    11 Million Views.
Since 2020 We are losing more than
    100,000 American 🇺🇸people
every year to overdose. Before the DEA and the CDC began the
    “War On Opioids”
we lost less than 25,000 each year, which is still too many, but it is past time to do something very different.
We are on track and will lose
    1 MILLION 🇺🇸AMERICANS
to fentanyl and fentanyl laced drugs in less than 10 years and by the end of 2028.
Yet it seems few are talking about this.

The OPIOID CRISIS was a false alarm set up by DEA who needed a win. They focused on Doctors and Chronic Pain Patients. They succeeded in increasing the suicide rate among people suffering with chronic pain and many veterans who had chronic pain from another government failed program; The Global War On Terror.

Please do an update of this video.
Every American now knows someone personally that suffers needlessly from disabling chronic pain and /or someone who has died from fentanyl or fentanyl laced poisoning.

If we are at war with China and their Mexican Cartel Proxies then let’s be honest eith ourselves before the American 🇺🇸 death toll reaches 2 Million.

Dead right. The war on drugs doesn’t work. It CAN be won but only with Draconian methods no politician and only half the public would approve. All it does is create a global, multi-billion dollar crime industry. You also have to ask whether governments have the right to stop huge numbers of people doing something they really like, even though it will destroy most of them; its THEIR choice, their life. Maybe the law should spend its time finding ways to ringfence and confine the damage to just the users. The global crime industry would vanish overnight if drugs were legalised and regulated.
