Somehow I missed this episode when it released, and only found it tonight when listening to old 5 CAST episodes in podcast form at work. Came here when I got back just to say; I would never wish for additional devastating fires to take hold anywhere, but if you somehow engineered another way for Danielle to return to Channel 5 I wouldn't be mad about it – she brought an infectiously good energy to this interview even at such short notice. It would've been so easy for any guest to place blame directly, to just use their time to point at a specific agency, or just turn the discourse into something more politically motivated, but the whole interview felt more like entertaining education.

    W journalism, W Danielle

Wait excuse me? Federal firefighters made minimum wage? Wtf I had no idea because lots of people want to be LAFD and they make good money. Shit they are underpaid as shit like we are at the state level.

I recently wrote a paper for my environmental science class about US policies around controlled burning, so I was really happy to see y’all cover this. I think it would be really cool if y’all talked to an indigenous tribe about their prescribed burning practices if you ever wanted to follow up on this story because the history of fire suppression isn’t really covered by traditional sources.

I'm surprised they don't do controlled burning in California. That practice is used in the forests and nature refuges (at least in NJ that I can see)

Thank you so so much for pulling resources for HPPD. i’m on year 6 and deeply hope someday there will be more research / a cure. Makes me emotional hearing you talk about it

I disagree with Andrew's take about wealth moving to hills only really existing in America. I agree with his take about it being about wealth and wealth disparity. Wealth disparity and gentrification exist in almost every developed nation. One of the other main reasons for the poor being concentrated in hills is it's significantly harder to get water up to those people. It's much easier to get water downhill than keep it up hill. As money moves in that's not an issue because they can build the infrastructure to move it there.

Ecology student here. This was a great watch and I think the conversation with Danielle brings up a very important aspect of the Environmentalist movement. Fire is a part of nature, as are storms, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, etcetera. We can not control these forces of nature, and nor should we try to.

We need to learn to coexist WITH nature, not try to control it. That means being prepared for wildfires rather than trying to prevent them altogether.

50:23 just got my PG&E settlement check from the fire she’s talking about in Santa Rosa, CA Coffee Park neighborhood where I lived back in 2017. Turns out a PG&E line broke and caused that fire because they didn’t keep it up and maintain it like they should’ve. My house didn’t burn but the flames were literally like a quarter mile away when I had to evacuate at 4am. After years of my lawyer going back and forth with them in a class action I finally got my check this April for $90k 😭😭🤣 not life changing but definitely a good bonus 💰💳🤑

The right wing strawmanning here is pretty unnecessary. Why wouldn't you try to get Rick Caruso? You highlighting Jewish space lasers of the hard data points that this was foreseeable and preventable. Not a great video Andrew and you are telling on your own biases.

I like how she says she doesn't have exact percentages about what caused it and then throws climate change as 3rd.

Jesus Christ how is this guy one of the most serious reporters out here?

No offense Andrew 😂, you do great work.
    I enjoyed the Kelly documentary.

insane how the firefighters are underequipped and underpaid. such a broken system that sets these brave people for permanent health problems and not enough money to even survive
