Why So Many Countries Use Bidets But the US Does Not

Weird History | February 26, 2026

Every day, the world flushes 270,000 trees down the toilet. If the US switched to bidets, it could save 15 million trees – so why don’t Americans use bidets? If you’re not familiar with this alternative to toilet paper in many countries, it’s a basin separate from the toilet for washing one’s nether regions. What countries use bidets? Many households in Europe, Asia, and South America rely on them.

And why are bidets popular in Europe, but not America? Colonial American hygiene began with chamber pots and outhouses, and the country eventually progressed to toilets. Overall, however, Americans were skittish about hygiene topics associated with bidets.

Because white folks who first came here were stinky AF and were afraid of water. So the aversion to anything that keeps you clean is no surprise. Heck! They were cleaning themselves with ash!

I discovered the Toto Washlet in a very high end hotel room in Hawaii about 5 or 6 years ago. I fell in love immediately. The cost was too much, so I bought a $45 toilet seat adapter from Amazon which is wonderfull. I used to travel with it, installing/uninstalling it in places I visited. I've been preaching ever since, and have converted many. In fact, I don't have to travel with it anymore, as all my friends have them now. I now have a portable, rechargeable battery operated version that I take on the road. I'll never go back!! On a recent trip to Turkey, I was shocked to find bidets in all the hotels AND public restrooms! And, yes, even though the wipes say 'flushable', that's only if you don't care about your plumbing or septic system.

I could literally live without toilet paper, we have bidet here in Uruguay and I been using in it since I was a kid up to my 42 years old now, no issues at all since my skin can take it perfectly. If I have to chose the bidet is a no brainer over the stupid toilet paper invention.

Been 100% fine with TP for 43 years. Plus there is like this weird pressure to use one, which makes me not want to use it. I also don't like having a wet butt. I think I'm good. Bring on the "your gross butt isn't as clean as mine" comments.

Just buy a Bum gun !! Clean well after going and if necessary use a tiny bit of soap and rinse well . Use a designated towel to dry . Zero toilet paper ever used !! No plumbing or septic issues ever again as well !!
Set this up during Covid as didn’t want to fight for toilet paper 🧻
Now will never go back !!!😊

I wanted to buy a bidet ever since my 2016 trip to Japan, but was put off by the price and the lack of an electrical outlet. However, I discovered a company that sells many bidets and I inquired whether I could use an industrial extension cord for an outlet 6 feet from my toilet. The company confirmed that I could so I purchased one about a month ago. I absolutely love this thing and were it not so pricey, I would have one on every toilet in my house. It is really a game changer for personal hygiene and the warm seat is like a warm hug.😊

I have a very simple plastic bidet which I bought online during lockdown when no toilet paper, and toilet bidet sales run out of stock. I carry the portable with me when traveling and use it at home. Very handy.

Wait until you discover "handheld bidet" or "bidet sprayer" it's totally different world to normal bidet.
The best thing about this is it doesn't need physical touch to that spot AT ALL.
-90% used of toilet paper and it cost you almost $0.
Western has bring so many good innovation to the world,
But this is the only thing that make me feel like you guys were stuck in 1900 century.

I’m a renter in a 100 year old apartment building. I can’t rearrange the plumbing. At the beginning of the Pandemic I bought a plastic squeeze bottle bidet for $7 on Amazon. I use about 2 rolls of toilet paper a year!

Visité EEUU hace unos años (New York)
