Why Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Blew Everyone Away At The Box Office

Looper | April 17, 2026

“Project Hail Mary” took off like a rocket, bringing in box office returns that are anything but rocky. But how did Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi adventure manage such an explosive opening weekend? Probably because it’s a great movie — but there are other reasons, too.

No. Underwhelming. Didn’t even look or feel like space. Generally if you loved this movie so much, I question your intelligence and judgment. If parents want to take kids beware there are very realistic dead bodies in the beginning otherwise kids may enjoy Rocky’s character. It’s a long movie some scenes boring.

I’m trying to come to terms with the psychological implications of being enamored with a puppet. I can relate to the impatient cheekiness, his love for his mate, and adorable work belt and celebration outfit was everything. The deep inward feelings for a character haven’t been felt since the Beatles. Wait….

I plan to wait for it to come to streaming in a few months. I'm sure it's a great film, but I enjoy watching films in the privacy of my home without any distractions from others talking to each other and checking their phones. For me the story matters more to me than the size of the screen and the sound quality offered.

Have already watched it twice (Dolby digital and 70mm) and have FINALLY found an IMAX 70mm showtime that fits into my work/travel schedule for an April 22 10am matinee showing in NYC, lol. Yes.. it’s THAT good.

Missed ALL that marketing, still went to see it. LOVED IT!!! Ryan Gosling is in it, it's based on a Andy Weir book, and Gosling said in interview around this movie, 'Hollywood needs to make movies that people want to see' or something to that effect, and that was enough for me!
