Why Progressives Are Bad At Organizing (with Rep. Ruwa Romman!)

Why don’t we have anything like that on the left? While Kamala Harris has added much needed excitement to the Democratic Party, my internet echo chambers are still full of progressives feeling more divided than ever.

I don't know how anyone would degrade you as a liberal – liberals believe in democracy while you clearly do not. What you are is a conservative operative working to keep it so that the American populace yearning for something better just shuts up, votes blue no matter who, and continue to be disregarded. A liberal in your position – and progressives are historically a liberal middle income movement to reform but not fundamentally restructure the system – would be arguing that people should suck it up for this election given the threat of Trump and then have a movement in place to actually hold the Democratic Party to account and organize around them for 2026 and 2028 to move them away. In fact, the DSA plan was originally to primary the Democratic candidates who are firmly on the right and replace them with progressives – a plan that fell away quickly once they were promised token votes but only when it was assured the vote would fail.
Your message here is that democracy is not about the will of the people but rather about gamesmanship – which is actually a blatant statement that we don't have a democracy at all, but rather an oligarchy, which is backed by Gilens and Page's landmark paper Testing Theories of American Politics. You argue that the Democratic Party owns people's votes rather than that the Democratic Party ought to try to earn votes, and nowhere do you suggest any sort of formal or informal electoral reform. You are actively repeating – abusing an operational irrationalist technique – that people should not be voting third party without giving any reasoning of substance, but rather just claiming it isn't the work that we have to be doing – because you alone determine what work needs to be done apparently. Opposing a genocide doesn't need to be done. Having a climate plan that would actually work rather than relying on assumptions about corporate behavior that have been repeatedly proven false doesn't have to be done. Just voting for the Democratic Party over and over, even if there isn't a threat like Trump next time around, even if Trump runs on the Democratic Ticket next time and wins the nomination – just vote blue no matter who. You know, because Blue Trump is better than zombie Hitler and we don't have the luxury of considering non-Nazis.
This video is so utterly undemocratic and manipulative that no one should take you seriously. Someone with a JD should be able to find a way to argue for voting for Harris without being so disgustingly unethical and acting like some QAnon dolt fanning conspiracy theories about third party candidates – which you don't expressly state like some others, but it's clearly tacit support. Do you have any idea what happens when you go out and you punch down on the third parties? You out group third party voters ensuring you cannot win over their votes and you alienate people who are already supporting you by showing an elitist, entitled attitude and reminding them that you're supporting people who are not like them. You could be pushing Harris to change her stance on genocide – and if progressives all started saying they weren't going to vote for her she would change that stance fast which would win her over tons of those voters you're targeting – but no, you instead put down people for having morals that have been embodied in international compacts to which the US is a signatory. "Oh, why can't the medical doctor ignore her practice for another 6 years?! Why doesn't she care? Surely her trust fund from Mums and Daddy would pay her bills while she fundraises for a living!"
Is your goal to be weirder than JD Vance?

Bush and Bowman weren’t voted out because they supported Palestine, otherwise the entire squad would have been voted out if that’s all it takes. They were voted out because they were focusing on palestine and not their districts. They were bad reps and their voters responded accordingly. They both voted against the infrastructure bill too.

I rarely hear Caucasian Americans speak about the cointelpro. I learned about it when I was about 16 and was horrified that such a flagrant violation of rights and deliberate attempts to destabilize and destroy the black community have not been taught in school. Based on that alone black people deserve restorative justice. Many of the “cultural” problems the right like to push off on black Americans are the result of the government suppressing and demonizing black liberation movements. I know so many white conservatives who refuse to acknowledge this and how any group would be struggling to get ahead even in the present as a result of these issues. I would love to see a deeper dive from you.

You make so many good points! I was raised in a conservative household in a conservative state & i just kinda went along cause i barely knew anything different. I hadn't ever really looked at how the policies of each side affected me & those i care about. Then my kiddo came out as first bi, then on the spectrum of gender fluidity.
I was resistant at first, even though i didn't identify as fully straight, but decided to start researching all of it more. I found out a lot about it & even realized I kind of identify as a bit genderqueer & found a name for my attractions, pansexual. I had previously avoided labels like the plague! Then we had an issue of conservative parents freaking out because they found out a teacher who was trans had been hired. We went to the school board meeting to support the teacher. I realized then, just how toxic the conservative masses wete!
Then my kiddo now in high school, started talking about current events issues more. I decided it was past time to switch away from a party that wanted people like my family & friends to cease to exist! Democrat is only better because we don't have the luxury of a different party that can compete on the same level of the 2 main parties!
Just wanted to say kids aren't always unaware & we can learn from them if we will just listen for a few minutes!

Conservatives are united by single issues and wedge issues. Progressives are divided by single issues wedge issues.
You can rattle off endless problems with Trump that directly affect his constituents and illustrate how he will make their life tangibly worse, and the response is:
-yeah but he's not woke
-yeah but he hates LGBT people, just like me
-yeah but he'll lower my taxes
Etc.
And if you make the same argument in reverse for Kamala to progressives, all of them decline to vote because of single issues:
-I'm not voting, she's a cop
-I'm not voting, she's okay with fracking
-I'm not voting because of her Gaza stance
The infinitely frustrating part is that progressives will make this argument even while they're happy with their candidate's stances elsewhere on the platform, and while being aware of and understanding that the only alternative's stance on the single issues that are a deal breaker for them are even worse. Progressives will refuse to vote for Kamala because of her stance on Gaza, despite the fact they know that Trump's stance on Gaza is even more bloodthirsty, while also being a climate denying, book burning, minority incarcerating, hate mongering, christian theocracy lauding disaster.
I asked progressives, what happens when Trump wins, and things are infinitely worse than they would have been under Kamala, and without fail they say stupid shit like "I'll be first in line to rebel against them with you". The more I associate with them, the more I realize that most progressives are deeply unserious people who'd rather fantasize about the revolution than realize real change

I think the statement that can encompass why the left can't come together as straightforward as possible is…
"I'm not helping you with OUR issues until you fix MY issue…"
And sadly many of the talking heads on the left have ego projects, not political, social, or economic projects. So they stand on their al pedestals while telling everyone else why everyone else is wrong…
But the last point, I think they are genuinely scared to challenge power because historically (as highlighted in this video), those who have stepped up to challenge power have often been assassinated by those who currently have it… Plus with the knowledge that they can't even organize groups to make impactful change, how are they going to manage governmental institutions to make and maintain the changes? They're scared, so platitudes are safer…
