Why is Everyone Getting a Music Biopic?

Mic The Snare | July 18, 2026

From Elvis and Queen to the upcoming four-film Beatles event, music biopics are taking over the box office. But why is this happening *now*, and why do so many of them feel the same?

I’m breaking down the five reasons behind the biopic boom, and how it’s changing the way we see, hear, and understand our favorite artists.

Michael (2026)

Elvis
Straight Outta Compton
Rocketman

i hope to one day be an Intellectual Property valuable enough to make a movie about. i hope i get to be involved too, because i want to make myself look as bad as possible. for example, did i really get my start selling heroin to 4th graders? no, but it'll be in the movie, i'll tell you that much

felt crazy when I seemed to be the only person who enjoyed deliver me from nowhere so i’m very happy to see it get a shout out in the “good biopic” list at the end

The Robbie Williams movie was so surprisingly good. Feels like it got hard done by bad advertising and also naming the movie after a Robbie Williams song that isn't even in his top 10 most famous ones.

That's something I read more and more: "I don't care how good or bad it is, I just want to participate in the cultural moment, it's an experience bro"
Like watching cattle herd themselves into the slaughterhouse.

The reason we have so many is because of the WEIRD movie by weird al, its so peak that hollywood wants to rival its success, unfortunately, none of these have weird al in them, its just that hollywood hasnt realised it yet

Yes, betterman Is the best biopic ever, I haven't seen it since I saw It on cinema, because It Made me cry so effin hard that i left the theatre crying, It uses every single resource of a musical to build a great and vulnerable story

13:00 keep in mind that Apple Corps have a plan to always have the Beatles in the news, each year they always do something to refresh the brand. They have anniversaries from 62 to 70 to celebrate. Then 1, then Cirque du Soleil, then new stereo mixes, then Now and Then, then 4 biopics before Paul and Ringo die.

I hope you'll be able to see Walk Hard pretty soon. It's not just good in that the humor is gold, the songs are top notch, and you can see the love and heart on screen… It's also incredible in that it changes the way you watch any biopic afterwards. I absolutely could not hold still watching Bohemian Rhapsody in theaters. That movie is nothing but biopic cliches, and almost each and every one was nailed in Walk Hard.

surprised you didn't mention the other, infinitely better unlicensed Bowie biopic Velvet Goldmine. Same director as I'm Not There (which is imo the greatest biopic of all time.)

My fave biopics are Rocketman & Better Man. I think I just prefer it a bit different & a fun storytelling version not here's a life & some things maybe be false or not in the correct order.
I also love Tick Tick…BOOM! idk if it's considered biopic but it's a fave movie musical & Andrew should have won best actor.
