Why He Trained Himself Not to React | Mark Bell

Danny Jones Clips | May 17, 2026

Mark Bell explains the mental training that helped him stay steady while watching friends get famous, successful, and miserable at the same time. He tells Danny Jones how social media pressure pushed him to study stoicism, emotional control, and eventually equanimity: the ability to stay balanced when life gets chaotic.

In this clip, Bell talks about learning to pause before reacting, choosing how to respond instead of being dragged around by every insult or setback, and why people sometimes mistake calmness for not caring. It is a rare look at the inner work behind a public life built around strength.

Mark Bell is a former elite powerlifter, inventor, gym owner, and host of Mark Bell’s Power Project.

I read from Dalai Lama's book – How To See Yourself As You Really Are, the most effective ways to undermine any negative emotions.

It's by understanding how they are created from impermanent conditions (dependent arising).

Because when their dependence on other things is understood, and their impermanence is understood, they are undermined, like when a dream is noticed to have been just a dream, the emotions associated with it will evaporate on their own.

One other good way (not in the book) is to check your immediate surroundings, your 5 senses, and ask yourself; is there any evidence right here and now that what I am thinking is true?

There is also the matter, that whatever You are aware of, be it something in your senses or in your thoughts, cannot be the You that is aware of it, because there is two there; the observer and the observed.
But the observer really can't be found, because if found, it would be another 'thing' that you are aware of. The observing awareness always remains unaffected by anything it observes, like a movie screen remains unaffected by the movies that roll on it.

The text message option has likely caused more confusion and misunderstandings than anything else ever.. it is astonishing that a 90 second or less phone call could eliminate 95% of text talk misunderstandings .
