Why Gen Z Hates AI But Uses It The Most (ft. Bernie Sanders)

More Perfect Union | September 1, 2026

Gen Z uses AI the most yet trusts it the least.

We sat Bernie Sanders down with them for a messy debate that isn’t happening in the public right now.

If we’re going to live with AI and push for a future that benefits working people, we need more conversations like this one.

More Perfect Union is an Emmy-winning, nonprofit newsroom whose mission is to build power for working people. Here’s what that means: We report on the real struggles and challenges of the working class from a working-class perspective. We attempt to connect those problems to potential solutions. We report on the abuses and wrongdoing of corporate power. And we seek to hold accountable the ultra-rich who have too much power over America’s political and economic systems.

Here is the solution – Ban all forms of Advertising, forcing products to increase in benefits for users rather than "Advertisers – ie: Power Seekers", force business to pay people in Bitcoin-denominated wages, instead of Fiat-denominated wages – this way, as the share market goes up with inflation, so do the wages. This is not rocket science – the causes of these problems are simple and created by the rich to disenfranchise the poor. Nuff Said!

You can smell the data centers 10 miles away??? Wow! That would concern me and I'd feel huge guilt using cloud-based AI for that reason. In relation to the response the Gen Z'er gave, cancer rates, if caused by those data centers, would go through the roof. Not only that but people would be affected at younger stages in their lives. This is very serious. In that context, I can't imagine the CEO's are too concerned about how we will feed the world and meet their basic needs generally. This needs a massive rethink. A Mars factory more locally to me doesn't produce sweet chocolate smells that travel 10 miles, but were concentrated locally within a much smaller area about 1/4 mile if that around the factory.

Maybe this is where local open AI holds a significant advantage for those who can afford the tech at this point, and then as tech becomes cheaper and easier to acquire in the normal more considered development lifecycle way (rather than push it out at all costs to humanity/earth and maybe manage the fallout approach), more people gradually acquire it and gain skills to use it as it matures and becomes safer to use (thus avoiding the rogue AI's we have now). This would have been a better and safer approach, socially, economically, politically and environmentally.

What drives me crazy is why no one ever brings up the fact that if the average consumer has no money to spend, corporations won't have customers to make money from. So if AI takes all the jobs, that means there would be no more customers.

Brit here, this is what I call the coin syndrome. Everybody is looking at one side of a coin, none at the negative side. The advancement of AI is driven by GREED. More profit. Not by care. There are
no laws to control AI now or in the future. Laws take years and decades internationally. Can you see where AI will be in ten years? Add to that, scientists that have worked on AI, say we have until
    2030. They a terrified.

Serious category error—"generations" don't use AI, individual people do. And the people who use AI the most are all but certainly not its biggest enemy, which would be people who do not or sometimes just lack the ability to use AI and are (rightly) concerned that their place in the economic pecking order is likely on a downward slope.

In the Netherlands, companies actively set out vacancy's and if people reply to it they get send away. Then they tell the local goverment that there are no people to fill their vacancy's … BUT they have the solution ready. So they ask for its oke that they will automate this vacancy.. And they get aproved!

Its crazy. I cant find a job while i see the same vacancy where i aplied to over and over again. its just very frustrating.

I'm an old man, although a dozen years younger than Sanders (I'm crowding 73).
It's interesting to hear how young people feel about A.I., and especially how it relates to the pandemic, an aspect I hadn't previously considered.
One of my previous careers has been eliminated by automation…not even A.I., just simple automation. I worry for these young people, especially for those who see prosperity in their future with A.I.
I'm far from a Luddite. I've been a computer geek for almost 50 years, I LOVE computers, at the gut level. As in, I enjoy coding in BASIC for leisure.
The threat of A.I. isn't new, it's been the topic of discussion for decades. The scariest thing about it is the lack of regulation.
Models improving on models, in seconds, not days or months. It could become an existential threat before anyone notices it.
FOOTNOTE: Sorry, I will NEVER pay for YouTube. I would kiss its ass goodbye first. But, congrats to those who are more wealthy than I, and I am pleased with content like yours that is not A.I. slop. I'm not a rabid anti-ad person. I watch Tubi TV, it has commercials, and I'm okay with that. I grew up with commercials on TV. I don't "get" the psychotic adversity to having content paid by ads. I have a YouTube channel, and it has limited ads. Sue me. It's not like I'm living off of it.

There’s nothing confusing about their gen using the most AI and then having the lowest opinion of it. These kids have seen first-hand that this shit is gross and it’s being force-fed to us. It’s hard to avoid by design. Some or them look guilt-stricken about using it and it’s heartbreaking.

Are you serious that's all you think AI is !!?? CHINA is trying to apply it to robotics to industrial productions !! Elderly Individuals have personal robots !! Who the hell do you think can realize that !!?? In America, the answer is never ME !!! It will be someone else will do it !!! Why never ask why not me !!!! You are too comfortable !!! Let me tell you something, Chinese see it this way. AI will make my life easier & create more time for my personal life. WHAT IS REQUIRED OF ME ?? ADAPT, UPGRADE MYSELF, LEARN HOW TO USE THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY ? JOBS WILL BE LOST, NEW JOBS WILL ALSO BE CREATED. STOP COMPLAINING & START ADAPTING !!! DON'T LET AN ELDERLY MAN TEACH YOU !!!

Youths are negative is BECAUSE they knew their government is INCOMPETENT. The right way is to proceed AND have competent government !!! AI is here to stay, like it or not !!! Why is the Chinese embraced AI ? They have faith in their government to work on limiting negatives about AI on the run !!!!

I went to high school with Tony. It was very gratifying to see someone with a fairly similar background and a non-dissimilar worldview bring up issues that directly effect not just my community but my own upbringing on essentially a national or even international stage. I have nothing but respect for this guy.
