Why Does It Always Rain On Me?!

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | April 21, 2026

Firstly, I’m sorry about the microphone obscuring my hands when I’m playing the guitar. I’m away at the moment so we’re making a bit of an ad hoc studio setup this week (as you’ve probably noticed). Secondly, the copyright pests were really strict on this song and kept flagging it so the clips are incredibly short. I know how annoying that is but I couldn’t make them any longer, I tried. Regardless, let’s have a listen back to the classic Travis song “Why Does It Always Rain On Me?”. Why was it a hit? What is it really about? Are you a fan? Does it bring back a sense of 90s nostalgia? Also my producer apologises for the typos, yet she still decided to keep them in the edit for your pleasure. Let’s go!

i liked his wonky teeth better.. its that joyous c chord on the . bridge that sets up the chorus . thats the special bit . its amazing how many anthems are cowboy chords .

Rain on me is just a wonderful song. I love it as much as your "Friday nights " , or the proclaimers "Sunshine on Leith".
We were all lying about something or other when we were 17. Lol

Yesterday I was at a Travis concert in Hamburg, Germany. It was absolutely epic. I like to believe that the band was overwhelmed by the great audienc – but they earned it by creating that music and by being such a great live band.

Just come across this a year late, but I thought I’d add my 2 penny’s worth, Travis are one of those bands that were so good live, the records were good, but it felt like they took their performance up a notch when playing to an audience.
And on Justin Hawkins, the media painted a picture of him and his issues in life, and he loved to ham it up for the camera in the videos, but his channel shows how good a musician he is and how genuine a person he is

For me, part of the magic is that the intro and the outro use a minor instead of a major chord. Chorus is Emaj-Bmaj-A-maj, but in the intro and outro/last chorus it becomes Emaj-b-Amaj – it's just a tiny detail, but I think it adds a lot to the song.

As a big fan of post-Britpop, that most unfashionable and most maligned of genres, I think “The Man Who” is a minor masterpiece. There again, I adore the first Starsailor album, so what do I know? 😂

When I run into famous musicians, most of them ignore me. I saw him in front of the venue the day of their concert in my town. Fran Healy was talking to a bunch of fans, I was waiting a bit further away as to not bother him. He noticed me and made a point to walk over and come talk to me. I'll never forget how kind he was!

As this video started my immediate reaction was "ARGHH, I FUCKING HATE THAT SONG!" As I listened to it again, having not heard it for donkeys, I realised my only reason for not liking it is that it was overplayed SO MUCH on the radio that every time it came on I had a fit of rage and wanted to rip my ears off. I don't listen to the radio any more.

The producer was Nigel Goodrich, who also produced The Bends. I think he brought the same emotion to The Man Who and that’s why that record was so successful. I loved it then and still do! ❤

I am very glad to hear from Mr. Hawkins that Fran Healy is a great human being – that’s what I considered him to be. One get a glimpse of that by watching a YT-clip of a gig about the musical journey of Travis. Very great and very funny. I highly recommend it to everybody who wants to know more about them and their career.

The song is not about Fran at all. He was close friends with Danny McNamara of the band Embrace and Danny, feeling a little sorry for himself with all the press attacks of the time, frustratedly blurted out the metaphore when speaking to Fran. Fran stole it and expanded on it. We still don't know what Danny lied about when he was a wippersnapper of a youth! Invariably the video has bugger all to do with the song.
