Why Brazilian Men Don’t Celebrate Their 24th Birthday | Tales From the Bottle

Qxir | October 16, 2025

Hilariously, in Brazil, the number 24 is considered “gay”. Why? It’s an unusual story.

“Jogo do bicho (“animal game”) is an illegal gambling game in Brazil, prohibited by federal law since 1946, but nevertheless very popular throughout the country. It is a lottery-type drawing, operated on a regional basis using the daily state lottery draw, by mobsters known as bicheiros or banqueiros (“bankers”). Despite its popularity, especially in Rio de Janeiro, it is illegal in 25 of the 26 states of Brazil plus the Federal District and those involved may be prosecuted. Paraíba is the only state where the game is legal and regulated by the state, even though federal law prohibits gambling. Unlike most state-operated lotteries, in Jogo do bicho any amount can be wagered.”

No this is wrong, 24 is a "gay" number in Brazil because it sounds like "A came on all fours" (vim de quatro) like instead of standing in your feets you are crawnling/in a position of submission.

I don't think people here care as much about this number anymore. At least not where I live that is… it used to be super annoying back when I was in high school though. Students were assigned numbers based on the ammount of students in the class and whoever was assigned 24 was always made fun of (if it was guy). Funny thing is, not that many people actually knew about the reason why 24 was a ghey number, it was just something that everyone knew almost by default for some reason.

The Empire of Brazil was really great, the emperor really cared about the people and the country, corruption was minimal, then the military overthrew the government in favour of a dozen rich families, and now the whole country is a shithole and these same families are still the richest families and mooch off the government they pretty much control through lobby, its disgusting.

Alternatively, the way 24 sounds in portuguese, "vinte e quatro" sounds a little bit like "vim de quatro" which translates to something along the lines of "I came on all fours". Honestly as a brazilian I thought that was the reason behind it

I got extremely confused as to how a number is associated with being gay. Then, things clicked into place when animals were tied to those numbers. I just thought that gay men were called deer because they pranced around or seemed effeminate

edit TLDR it's a boomer joke

Brazilian man just a week away from my 2nd 23rd birthday here. For all of you that have been wondering about it, the deer is considered a gay animal by Brazilians because it is said to prance around in a feminine way.

It really just is a joke 😅 a widely known joke, most people don't even know (or remember like me) the history behind why it came to be. Also last time I seen someone joke about "24" being gay was like a decade ago or more 😂

1:49 i think the order is that one because of alphabetic order in portuguese (ostrich=avestruz, eagle = aguia, butterfly = borboleta, dog = cães, and so on). im not sure because im from argentina but seems to be the case

Huh. I guess now we know why Spongebob and Patrick found that number so funny in Mrs. Puff's Boating School that day. 25 however, will remain a mystery…

Yes, but not only because of this, as a kid in elementary school in brazil you hear kids laugh when you say "vinte e quatro" (24), they ask "Vim de quatro?" which sounds resemble the phase.
    Vim de quatro translated
"Vim" = i came (not sexual)
"de quatro" = the passive position in doggystyle
so something like "I came in doggystyle"
So your video is not wrong but a lot of people don't like the number just because it sounds a bit like this
Says a lot about us brazilians ksksksks

Bruh, this isnt the reason why "24" is a gay number in Brazil. The number 24 in portuguese its pronnounced as "Vinte e Quatro", wich sounds VERY simillar to saying "Vim de quatro", wich means to come on all fours onto someone. So, everytime you say "24" in portuguese, its kinda like saying you're getting your butthole eaten. Thats probably the reason they choose the "deer" as the animal for the number 24 as well. Since "Deer" in portuguese translates to "Veado", wich is a slang for calling someone a "Faggot". (In Brazil, many people associate the image of Bambi the deer as a gay simbol for the same reason, people here often call someone a "Bambi" as a way to calling them gay).

There are another jogo do bicho references, such as: "aqui é 13" (or 13 related expressions that makes references to the mascot of a football team mascot, the rooster) or the "sete galo" ("seven rooster" thats a slang for naming the Honda 750, 7-50 the rooster number)
