Throughout the 90s and 2000s, a contest was regularly held in video game magazines where readers could win “The Ultimate Gaming Rig,” which included a massive variety of consoles, TVs, VCRs, PCs and more. The contest seemed too good to be true, yet it persisted for well over a decade. How could such a thing continue if it weren’t legitimate? Here’s a look at what was actually happening with this contest.

Won this thing in 1998. Still have the winning entry sheet. It was a fun game and pursuit. Never did get a prize, though. Not a dime. The guy claimed the company went bankrupt right after I won and couldn't pay anything. With no real recourse I gave up on getting anything.

God damn!! I placed in both contests 5 times and NEVER EVER GOT A PRIZE. And I mean a lesser prize. I recall the placement letter and scores and there was supposedly lesser prizes for placement. I waited and nothing. I would have like to seen all the top entries and words used. Damn!

Holy crap. I remember seeing that ad. All I wanted was the Turbo grafix 16. We had most everything else in that pic.

I didn't have any money at the time (because I was a kid) but I spent so much time fantasizing about winning that 16-Bit rig!

I feel like the theory that he set out to create a legitimate puzzle cover would hold more water if he didn't restart the company so many times after the first failure

Any updates ? The person hosting this contest was not working alone. We heard a few others giggling while speaking to who ever it was we were talking to over the phone, shipping would of been $400 from "las vegas" at the time back in 1993-1994.

Finally! A video on this ad campaign. I subscribed to your channel bc of this! (I’m a bit late,I know) but I’ve been looking for info on this since I saw it in EGM in 1994 and promptly entered w/ my allowance money. It was the version w/ 3DO, Jag, Genesis/Sega CD & SNES. It had AVP for Jag on the screen. This is info is gold!!! TY again Justin!

Yeah i could see him actually setting this up to be legit and then his wife cheats on him, divorce him, take half his stuff including the house. He has to move, probably moved to oregon because of either new gf or family. He is broke living off of scraps from the contests and what ever job he has besides that. Yeah, i'm not defending the guy. I think he dug him self into this. But i can't help feeling a little bad for people like him. Then i'm reminded that they purposefully chose to keep scamming people and there by also reminded that they have no remorse and I feel like they got what was coming for them. Karma is a bitch.

Thank you. I was apart of this Pandemonium PSM 30 years ago using a Webster dictionary. I don't recall of how I was sending money to this company. I guess sending dollar bills that had somehow successfully made it through the mail when it wasn't supposed to. I don't recall winning the first stage at all. But I do rember getting their reply to do another puzzle.

What's so crazy is, the guy could have just simply never told anyone they actually "won" and he probably would have gotten away with it for longer than he did. It was so complex, would anyone have taken the time to see if their score was actually the highest? Just an incredibly dumb scam.
