Japanese diet in all honesty is the best diet IMO. A cup of rice, normally jasmine. Some type of protein chicken, fish, beef (Fish is rich is omega-3). Tons of veggies and some fermented food. Also tends to be less in sodium.

My recommendation: Educate yourself about caloric density, eat food that makes you full but has few calories (vegetables), pay some attention to protein, not in an exagerated way, but you should meet the recommended targets for protein even if you are restricting your other macro nutrients. And no, you don't have to eat meat or junk food to do so. Move smarter not harder. Intensive sport will only make you hungry, instead increase the number of steps or find a low intensity activity you enjoy that burns some more calories without putting the body under stress. That's not to say that high intensity sport is bad, it's actually great for muscle growth and cardiovascular fittnes, but while loosing weight, it's probably not the right time for it.

I lost 25 pounds and how kept it off for over 10 years, with no weight gain in sight. Unlike my friend's super restrictive calorie diet with the inevitably bounce back, I simply began eating a healthy permanent diet (cut back on snacks) which resulted in slow weight loss. It took 8 months but there you have it. 2 caveats: 25 pounds is not that much for a 175 pound man, and I have a slight frame (ectomorph). this may not work for everyone.
