Where Did It Go Wrong With Maroon 5?!

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | October 5, 2025

It’s time to try and see the good in a band I am now renowned for disliking. We are going to revisit Maroon 5, however this time I’m reacting to one of their earlier hits “This Love”. It can’t be as bad as Moves Like Jagger, so let’s discuss.

When this song came out I became a fan. I saw Maroon 5 supporting one of my favourite bands on a UK tour with Songs About Jane. I took the CD cover to get signed, not expecting to meet the band but I did by fluke. We went to drop off some friends from the concert venue to the hotel on foot as it was nearby.

We saw the band in the hotel lobby/bar. I have to say Adam Levine didn’t smile or say anything to me, whilst he signed my album and had this stuck up air about him. As for Jesse, he was super lovely and asked how to spell my name. I think I may have bought 2 other albums by the band since but Moves like Jagger ruined it for them musically.

I think if he tries he could stop the video every 0.5 seconds instead of every 1.5 seconds. Might even be more impactful. I mean at 1.5 second we almost hear some of the music. But then we wouldn't hear his brilliant quips as frequently, so I Guess it's a trade off.

Such a sad state of affairs with Maroon 5. Cos their debut album is one of my top 10 fave albums, but everything since has been generic trash pop. It's like they had a totally different song writer since the first album.

I was going to write this on your video for Moobs… but it made more sense to write it here. I agree with everything you say about Maroon 5. This Love is from an album called Songs About Jane, which I thought was a great record, beginning to end. But they got subsumed by pop to the point where they morphed into something completely different from what they started out to be. I can still listen to an enjoy Songs About Jane… but I don't like anything they did after. And Adam Levine very quickly began to believe his own press releases. That said, there's a video of him doing a fairly decent version of Purple Rain.

marron 5 used to be good before like on songs about jane. a song like harder to breathe is miles better than what they do today. They also were a better band when they didnt call themself maroon 5.

I remember liking this song for a minute. It’s has a lot of the elements of a classic soul track. What soured me on it was that it doesn’t swing. The rhythm is so stilted it feels like a polka group covering a Stax song.
