What We Lost When We Ditched Cassette Tapes

Digging The Greats | November 1, 2025

The personal mixtape is the closest thing we have to a time machine.
It’s so much more than just a playlist of songs. If you’ve ever received one, you know what I mean.

Welcome back to Mixtape, this is part 3 of my 4 part series on cassette tapes. We’ve seen how tapes upended music distribution, and put a crack in reality, but today we’re looking at the magic within these cassette time machines, going to… the moon. and getting… very personal.

One of my university friends back in the late 80s/early 90s used to make the BEST mixtapes. Goth, rock, indie, industrial, and random shit he bought because he liked the album cover. One, I recall, was called "The Goldfish That Ate New York". Each side was labelled – "The 10 Second Memory Side". 😂. Great days.

    Fantastic series!

Amazing series, though you should have marked in the name that this is Ep. 3, it's the only episode that hasn't that info in the name, might get lost, I thought it might be not related video ^^ but I'm happy I clicked on it.

P.S. I hope Megan sees this episode.

Absoluteley love this philosophical ponderings over the phenomenon that we call The Mixtape. And the tracks at the end credits are boomin'. Do you have them somewhere we could listen to them other than here?

In The End being the next track to play after this girl he never got together with confesses her teenage love for him is absolute CINEMA! You can't plan how perfect that actually was
