What If You Could Build the Death Star?

What If | November 2, 2025

That’s no moon. It’s a space station. The enormous, planet-killing kind, designed for only one thing — to bring order to the galaxy. It’s Star Wars’ Imperial superweapon, the Death Star. What would it take to build one just like this? Where would we assemble the biggest weapon of mass destruction?

What If is a mini-documentary web series that takes you on an epic journey through hypothetical worlds and possibilities. Join us on an imaginary adventure — grounded in scientific theory — through time, space and chance, as we ask what if some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence were different.

    So you’re telling me there’s a chance

    Quick edit:
    1. That’s a lot of likes
    2. It’s a joke. No need to dive deep into math and science to explain to me that it ain’t happening. I know

    Hope y’all have a wonderful day 👌🏻

Yea if we see aliens coming from a distance we start investing in a Death Star construction and hide it just in case their friendly and want to make peace but if not ALL SYSTEMS FULL POWER!

The death star is a waste of time, money and resources.
You could slap an FTL drive to a metal slug the size of a small vehicle and destroy planets that way.
    Seriously it's a waste.

I don't have anything to really back this up but I always kind of envisioned the Death Star as a self-contained metropolis in space, with its own manufacturing facilities, probably even hydroponic farms to produce food rations, etc. I mean that would explain why they even bother with trash compactors, instead of simply jettisoning the shit into space (which we know Imperials do before they jump to hyperspace.) You'd only compact it if there's a need to transport or store it, which you would only bother doing if you're keeping it around.

In all fairness, the power bill would be substantially less as it had its own main and sub reactors (hyperrmatter/ Ion fusion even) to power itself. so other than maintenance costs after getting it up and running, Id imagine it the power not costing very much if anything at all.

You do not build an extremely big space station using rockets from a planet. You build it close to asteroids that can supply the materials. And once it is built, the cost to keep it working would be minimal since it would be self sufficient. Using money inside it would be illogical. Since it is military, and all food is created inside, and waste is recycled, there is no need to calculate the cost of those things because it would be just "free". Only thing you need money would be to pay the soldiers salary.
