What If Megalodon Sharks Never Went Extinct?

What If | October 26, 2025

Would you ever venture into the ocean if you knew this creature could be lurking beneath you? It’s twice the size of a T. rex, its jaws are big enough to crush cars, and it can swallow multiple humans at a time! This ancient beast is called a megalodon shark, and if it had never become extinct, it would have a surprisingly large impact on our lives. How would they change the way we use our oceans?

Correction at 4:33 – Yes, you are correct — the megalodon was indeed a fish and not a mammal.

What If is a mini-documentary web series that takes you on an epic journey through hypothetical worlds and possibilities. Join us on an imaginary adventure — grounded in scientific theory — through time, space and chance, as we ask what if some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence were different.

Yeah I think megalodons would be less likely to attack individual swimmers and more likely to attack large groups of swimmers and also boats due to their size. Navies would spend more time escorting ships to fight off megalodons in a similar way to how they were used in WW2 to fend off submarines

If it's still around it's going to be in very small numbers confined to a certain region of the Pacific Ocean. Take for example the California Condor; its population is confined to the Pacific coast of the United States. That bird used to scavenge the carcasses of the mega-ungulates till those beasts went extinct. Condors used to be everywhere now it's limited to feeding off marine mammal corcasses.
