What If a Gamma-Ray Burst Hits the Earth?
What if we told you that supernovas aren’t the brightest events in the Universe? Gamma-ray bursts are. They shine hundreds of times brighter and only last for several minutes at most. But even a second would be enough for them to mess up all complex life on the planet.

Produced by Underknown in Toronto, What If is a mini-documentary web series that takes you on an epic journey through hypothetical worlds and possibilities. Join us on an imaginary adventure — grounded in scientific theory — through time, space and chance, as we ask what if some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence were different.

We just got bad luck if the gamma ray burst chooses to hit us out of all the other planets in the galaxy

How ever the good news is that the accuracy of a GRB hitting the solar system is very low.
And stars are constantly moving throughout our galaxy and eventually the poles of WR 104 will likely miss us.
But if it does hit our solar system, we have 8 thousand years before the GRB hits our solar system.
Even though we expected GRBs to hit our solar system.

The chances of getting hit by a gamma ray burst are low but never zero

I hate the constant laserbeam edit like a grb would be this super focused narrow beam that travels millions of lightyears without fanning out.

Guess what! A supernova explosion of Betelgeuse is quite likely to result in a gamma ray burst as portrayed in this video. And the odds are good that the earth will be hit by it. Just saying.

I think its over rated. Its not like the radiation is like a laser. It with diverge enormously from those distances that there will be so dispersed that it will yield little power over the surface area of the earth.

Do gamma ray bursts also occur from starquakes? I do remember a video about a magnetar releasing a gamma ray bursts from a starquake for outside our galaxy

It amazes me the way most people especially those who make videos like this still believe the universe is billions of years old because any event or events that happened in the non repeatable past are only as good as the records we have of them and we can never be 100% sure they are accurate so whether the universe is old or young it has to be taken on faith and anything that has to be taken on faith is not science even if you believe it is
