What happens to consciousness when clocks stop? | Bernard Carr & Bernardo Kastrup

Essentia Foundation | October 20, 2024

Hans Busstra sat down with Bernard Carr and Bernardo Kastrup to discuss all presentations given at our ‘Time and Mind’ conference and elaborate further on their own ideas. For instance, both Carr and Kastrup agree that, if you take an idealist perspective, you need multiple time dimensions to account for the decomposition problem: the mechanism by which consciousness with a big ‘C’ resolves itself into consciousness with a small ‘c’.

It's challenging to definitively say how many of the ideas discussed in the conversation are strictly "falsifiable" in the traditional scientific sense. Many of the ideas discussed are philosophical in nature and relate to subjective experience, making them difficult to pin down with empirical tests.

However, here's a breakdown of some key ideas and their potential for falsifiability:

    * *Ideas Difficult to Falsify:*

    * *The nature of subjective time and its relationship to physical time:* The speakers propose that subjective time might be a different dimension or operate fundamentally differently from clock time. Testing this directly is extremely difficult, as subjective experience is not easily quantifiable or measurable with current scientific tools.

    * *The existence of a hierarchy of conscious states:* Carr's suggestion of a hierarchy of consciousness extending from individual to planetary or even cosmic levels is highly speculative. It's unclear what kind of evidence would support or refute such a claim, making it largely unfalsifiable at present.

    * *The role of consciousness in shaping reality or collapsing the wave function:* Ideas about consciousness playing an active role in shaping reality, such as in interpretations of quantum mechanics, are heavily debated and face significant challenges in terms of designing testable experiments. The conversation touches upon the idea that the division between quantum and classical realities might be observer-dependent, but testing this notion rigorously would require overcoming significant theoretical and experimental hurdles.

    * *The possibility of precognition operating through mechanisms outside known physics:* While some experimental work on precognition exists, attributing it to mechanisms outside of known physics makes it difficult to design experiments that could definitively prove or disprove such claims. The speakers discuss different models of precognition, including those involving direct access to future information and those working through more indirect means, but testing these models within the framework of current physics presents significant challenges.

    * *Ideas With Potential for Falsifiability, Though Challenging:*

    * *The relationship between specific brain states and the subjective experience of time:* While the speakers acknowledge the difficulty of reducing consciousness to brain activity, they discuss research suggesting that our experience of time is influenced by our bodies and brains. Further investigation into the neural correlates of temporal perception could potentially lead to testable predictions and a more nuanced understanding of how our brains construct our experience of time.

    * *The effects of altered states of consciousness on the perception of time:* Research on altered states of consciousness, such as those induced by meditation, psychedelics, or sensory deprivation, could offer insights into the malleability of temporal experience and its relationship to brain activity. While interpreting such research within the context of grander theories about time and consciousness can be challenging, these investigations hold potential for generating testable hypotheses.

    * *Ideas That Could Become Falsifiable With New Scientific Developments:*

    * *The existence and nature of higher dimensions of time:* Carr's suggestion that higher dimensions of time might be needed to account for consciousness is closely tied to speculative theories in physics, such as string theory. Advances in these areas, particularly if they lead to testable predictions, could potentially have implications for our understanding of time and its relationship to consciousness. However, it's important to note that even if these theories are supported, directly linking them to subjective experience would likely remain a complex challenge.

The conversation highlights the limitations of current scientific methods in addressing certain questions about consciousness and time. While some ideas discussed might become more amenable to scientific investigation with future breakthroughs, others might remain within the realm of philosophical speculation.

I don't see the flow/passage of time, i only see that things (included me) change. There are tribes in africa who don t use any word which has reference to the passing time but only to the changes in the things or humans.

After studying all the analogies between eastern philosophy and modern physics (quantum physics and general relativity and so on) i think western philosophies are right in the foundamental interpretation they give about reality…so (making it trivial) everything it does exist is all connected, it is all oneness (one consciousness or call it as you like). So there is this sort of foundamental dimension from which the materialistic word of separation arise.
As you say in the video all the model we try to use to find the truth to explain the reality growth from the mind. But in doing this, in my opinion (and in this opinion i share the same point of view of donald hoffman) we will never find a way to reach the "real" reality. Every model and every discovery will never lead us to understand this reality/oneness. Mind can only discriminate things, and ok it can give us model to explain some experiences we have, but it will never be the reality, it will be only the best guess, the best approximation we have in a certain historical moment (and this model influence our point of view, in other world science influence our perception, our reality, taking us further away from the real reality/oneness).
So if you want to create new models to find new technologies to make life easier for people that's ok, but if you want to find the real reality stop using the intellect, stop creating models and just meditate.
    Bye 🙂

I agree we live in multi-dimensional spaces. When I observe my individual self I cannot see the oneness of all, but when I experience expanded consciousness I experience the ones of the all!

The NOW does not last any time period! The now has no beginning or end! It cannot be defined hence it does not exist. It can be falsly mis defined as any period of time. Since it does not exist it does not mind being mistaken for any period. We measure events and call the time in between events – any time spam. But there is only one event. Timeless event.

Advaita Vedanta, a philosophical school within Hinduism, has been articulated for over 3,000 years.

Advaita Veda prove that this life is an illusion.

Please refer Advaita. You will learn more about life.

The foundational issue that’s being pointed to here is that science claims that because subjective experiences can’t be verified by outside observers, it is of no value at all.

    My (separated) two cents…

The answers they seek lie beyond the mind and conscious observation. By beginning an argument from point of view of a conscious observer we create the illusion of separation.

    Just for fun….
Light is invisible until it hits an object…..Consciousness is invisible until it shines it awareness upon an object…..Time is invisible until a conscious observer (seeing themselves as separate and not whole) creates duality of mind and body (objects) and thus (create) separate events taking place in space and time.

Well done to all participants and thank you for this video. It is refreshing to witness a respectful and well-reasoned discussion. It did however occur to me that in coming to an understanding and answers to the key points raised, it is perhaps essential and helpful to first define what is meant by: 1. "Mind" 2. "You" and 3. "I". Who (or what) is it that is asking the questions and who (or what) is it that is aware of the very points that are under discussion? Once the answers to those questions are understood, the discussion perhaps points to some deeper understandings.

Māori have rituals where they can call (chant) time (past, future) into the present. I have been privileged to attend one of these gatherings with approx 50 people. To me, it felt like being in the heart of a whirlwind, you are aware of the others but you can't hear or see them (only metres apart). Individuals are invited to feedback to the group if they wish, the experiences are anomalous. No drugs are involved.

Hisriey is dependent on believing there is a progression of events with causes and consquences whose connections are deemed to be dependent. But what if tbete is now progression of events just a kaleidoscope of a multitude of potential combinations that are available to a very veey l 'rounded' eye lookung ar a flat eaeth.😅
