I think the lack of confidence thing was to make it believable for him. Otherwise he'd probably be questioning why a non broken in some way wounded beauty will have anything to do with him. Even the classic beautys that get with lower looking men tend to have a perceived flaw about themselves that makes them insecure usually.

21:40 I am proudly a fat person who does not diet anymore. I've been on many diets in my life and I developed an eating disorder I stopped dieting and torturing myself and all of a sudden I'm much healthier and lost a ton of weight ( which you don't need to do to be happy or find love)

This lady missed the whole point of the movie. Key word SHALLOW. When I first saw the movie what I got from it was a message of how wrong those societal standatds are. Especially after the heartbreaking burn unit scene. She's mocking the very things they were already mocking.

I'm a 36yr old lifelong fatty. I found this movie hilarious when it was released, still find it hilarious now, and always will. If this movie was going to offend anyone, it would be me. I cant overstate how NOT offended I am. Its genuinely funny and imo the intent behind the message of the movie is pretty pure. Why is everyone so offended about everything???

My sister the one who first showed me this movie when I was 8, and I remember loving it so much when I was a kid bc it taught a really good moral lesson about superficial beauty. Now that I'm an adult, I find it ridiculous but I still like it.
