WELCOME FRESHMEN The Meanest Show Nickelodeon Ever Made
Before Nickelodeon became the polished nostalgia machine we remember, it was still experimenting with what a kids’ sitcom was even supposed to be—and few shows capture that strange transitional era better than Welcome Freshmen.
Premiering in 1991, Welcome Freshmen began as a high school sketch-comedy series filled with awkward students, cynical jokes, bizarre morning announcements, and a vice principal who seemed to genuinely despise freshmen. Then, halfway through its run, the show completely changed direction and transformed into a traditional sitcom.
But the format change is only part of the story.
The series was filmed inside Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios Florida, where theme park guests could watch television production happening through observation windows. Behind the scenes, the crew had to make a TV show while also looking busy enough to entertain the tourists walking past.
And somehow, this largely forgotten series also became connected to the early careers of two future Backstreet Boys. Howie Dorough reportedly appeared in the original pilot before the cast was replaced, while AJ McLean later appeared in an aired episode.
So how did Welcome Freshmen survive for four seasons and 54 episodes despite never becoming one of Nickelodeon’s biggest hits? Why did it abandon its original format? And why has the show almost completely disappeared while other early Nick series became nostalgic classics?

I didn't know what a "freshman" was when I first watched this show. My biggest memory of the show is having that "oh that's what it means" moment.

To this day i still quote one joke from the principal. "What's the difference between a freshman and a soccer ball? The ball goes farther when you kick it!"

I used to love this show. It has completely disappeared from the Classic Nickelodeon talk. The hype I had for this video when I saw it is crazy. It definitely wasn't the best next to all the other 90s Nick shows, but it was really good.

Wow, this brings back some memories. 12-year-old me had a huge crush on Tara and, for some reason, really liked the shot of the cheerleaders in the opening credits.

Funny how I did not see anything about a character who was pranking students on “pulling his finger” gags. One of them was a jock taking one of his plates rigged with string on his index finger. Trailing off until it went off with a blast. Damn that was hilarious!

I remember ALL of the other shows mentioned better than Welcome Freshman. 😅 I remember the opening sequence and the theme song, but I literally NONE of the actors. Wow, weird.

I would love to see episodes about Parker Lewis Can't Lose and The Tomorrow People (about kids who can teleport- it was on in the 80's or 90's and I remember it being on nickelodeon). Whenever I try to look it up, I get a lot of info on other shows with the same name, but never the one I'm looking for.

I didn't forget the show. I remember Mr. Lippman very well as I had teacher just like him! Also, he had a inhumanoid figure on top of his shelf and even was there for a Merry Christmas bumper with one of the students! Ah, such refreshing memories

The only thing I remember from the show is the Halloween bumper when the girl opened the locker and you only saw the principal’s head.

I remember this show fondly but I was like 9 when it premiered. I thought everything was good as long as it was on TV so I didn't mind the tonal shift. And I recognize that theme song from the first note. Loved the show.

'Funny haha or funny weird?' is the line I stole from this show when I was a kid. Probably 7 at that time. I remember liking the show because it was absurdist comedy aimed to kids. Like Sinefeld JR 😆

Watched it when it originally aired and loved it. Definitely preferred the sketch comedy seasons. I remember Coach Roach and then they had Coach Roachette and the girls were complaining that they weren't playing basketball and they wanted to "make baskets" so she had them literally weaving baskets the next class. What's crazy though is I loved the theme song and looking back it's basically grunge and yet I still totally missed out on Nirvana and the whole scene because I didn't really get into music until after Cobain died.

I was like 7 or 8 years old when this was on and I remember watching it and not getting it at all. it quickly became one of the shows that I changed the channel on lol
