There are some factual errors in this review but given all the confusion over who plays what and how those sounds were generated on this album, it's understandable.

This is my favorite album by the Byrds. I listened to it over and over in high school back in the 1980s. For whatever reason it spoke to me at that time in my life, and when I return to it now 40 years later it still speaks to me in different ways. I can understand "Goin' Back" a little bit more. And "Change Is Now" is more apparent to me than ever. I even like "Artificial Energy" and could use some now.

Croz was a big jerk….but Lady Friend is such a beautiful song. I wish someone would find the footage of them playing it on The Tonight Show. Absolutely love The Byrds, one of my favorite groups, especially Gene Clark. Another great episode as always!

As a kid in the 2000's, I recall my dad seeking out this album on CD and saying it was hard to find because it wasn't a well-loved Byrds album. I think he was fond of it back in the day and wanted to see if it still held up as a good record, despite the Byrds' own opinion of it. I can't remember if he ever came across a copy. I think it's a great record, perhaps a bit disjointed but also unexpected in a good way.

Crosby's voice is clearly on Tribal Gathering, Dolphins Smile and Old John Robertson, the latter first being released as the b side of Lady Friend

Very pertinent choice for the Byrds memory ! They achieved strange ways of making Masterworks in USA folk- rock ! No commercial potential at all but so perfect for some happy few listeners! The Byrd Brothers Band!

Great episode. I love this album – even the first and last tracks. And thank goodness "Triad" was bypassed. Of note, I believe that McGuinn and Hillman didn't know Crosby's lyrics to "Draft Morning" when they recorded it, so they wrote their own for the recorded version. Also, I may be the only one, but I do also really dig "Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde".

😎👍 To my ears, "Wasn't Born To Follow" was a deliberate attempt on Goffin & King's part to compose "Take A Giant Step" Part 2. Same meter, same tempo and similar lyrical themes. 🥸

This is the best Byrds album. Although it's criminally too brief. Sweetheart of the Rodeo is a close #2.
And, I'd say Full Circle from 1973, with all five original Byrds would be my #3.
Gene Clark was an amazing songwriter! RIP Gene!✌️
The Notorious Byrd Brothers was released in mid-January, 1968… just as the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army were gearin'-up, and moving into their spring-off positions for the 'Notorious' (pun intended) Tet Offensive later that same month. With that in mind, listening to tracks like 'Artificial Energy' and especially, 'Draft Morning' are very poignant to me.
A P.S. note on Clarence White : an AMAZING Country and Blue Grass guitarist!!! His presence on Byrds album we first hear on 1967's Younger Than Yesterday. He would have had one helluva career through the 70s, 80s and 90s. A Great young musician, his life criminally cut short. But he absolutely was a Byrd!
Of the 'Tier 2' Byrds, Clarence White and the Legendary Gram Parsons!!! Incredible artists!

Love Airplane version of triad and actually the birds one. More forward thinking then most things at the time and actually shows the beauty of Davids voice. Going Back give me a break lol

I am always gratified when this highly capable woman reports on a band capable of, and achieving , artistic statement. Verses the attractive bauble of the moment successful band that sometimes sneaks in here. not to denigrate popular success at all. it is just that some bands have a reach across time that validates my position about their work as singularly artistic, better. where other bands are constrained by passing fashion, talent or happenstance.
