Friday, April 7, 2023 – The Doctrine of Discovery has been repudiated by the Vatican. What does this mean for Indigenous people? A runner honors his ancestors. Plus, an artist uses her voice to protect Mother Earth.

A newly released study shows horses appeared in North America earlier than scientists thought.

Many oral histories carried by Indigenous groups say their people had horses before Europeans arrived in their homelands. Research is now catching up to that knowledge, according to the journal “Science.”

Music is important for celebration and at RES, one DJ wanted to make a lasting impact. DJ Ty-ski shared his creative process with ICT’s McKenzie Allen-Charmley.

In Massachusetts, a racist state seal depicting an Indigenous person may finally be changed.

The Massachusetts state seal is everywhere, on the state flag, state police patches and in notable places around the state’s capitol. In 2021, a 19-person commission was created to make changes to the seal. Last week, state lawmakers said the deadline is November 15th of 20-23.

In Minnesota, Indigenous youth are adding their voices to an online mental health guide for their peers. The Native youth portion of the guide was created by health care system Allina Health in partnership with the Indigenous Peoples Task Force.

On March 30, the Vatican officially repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery. The move comes after Indigenous people across the world demanded the action for decades. Robert Miller is a professor of law at Arizona State University, and a leading scholar in this area.

Lyla June’s art takes many different forms. She is a writer, scholar and community organizer.

Ahead of her performance at Cahokia in downtown Phoenix, Arizona last week, Aliyah Chavez asked her about her latest projects.

A Hopi and Navajo runner came in as the top American in the 38th L.A. Marathon. Hosava Kretzmann finished in sixth place. That was out of nearly 22,000 runners. This was his debut, running in his first marathon ever.
