Watching 2 episodes of final season makes me realise that the screenplay and direction has reduced tremendously compared to previous Season 3 and 4 and 2

Butcher cannot be the villain. That would be disrespectful to the character. He's the protagonist of the entire story. More than starlight, more than Hughie. "The Boys" is named after him. He's definitely a vigilante but not a villain

My theory: first half of the season they highlight how bad the state of the world is in. Starlight breaks out hughie and then they proceed to find the other boys and break everyone out. Butcher releases the virus. Homelander is in charge and hunting down anyone who doesn't agree with him on supe supremacy. Homelander contracts virus and his powers are weakened. He wakes up soldier boy and convinced soldier boy to help him save supes from virus. Soldier boy know where to obtain compound v1. The original recipe, or possibly Homelander uses soldier boys blood to make himself stronger (this was shown possible in Gen V season 1). 2nd half of season starts with Homelander being revamped even stronger and in turn Butcher has to re-plan taking him down. Butcher re-unites with the rest of the boys to come up with a plan to take down Homelander. I think new black noir, a-train, Ryan team up with Butcher and the boys to take down Homelander and Soldier Boy. Theres always a possibility of Marie using her healing ability on Butcher and Butcher re-using temp V alongside his tumor powers to have an ultimate show down with Homelander once and for all.

My theory
This intertwines somewhat with other people's ideas let's say but I reckon both homelander and butcher get depowered / desuped or become human as such and the scorched earth fight will end with them fighting as humans which butcher will merk homelander as he will never have felt so weak
