James returns to the Top 10 format for a deep dive into everything wrong with modern movie theaters: from $30 popcorn buckets and the IMAX scam, to Nicole Kidman’s spiritual AMC ad, recliner sear squeaks, the theater becoming everything but a theater, and the “concession voucher” workaround for streaming TV finales. A spiritual follow-up to Top 10 Reasons Blu-ray Sucks.

I quit going to theaters before COVID. Too fucking expensive. I don't do that $20-$30 in-theater rental bullshit either. I just wait until it's at an average rental/purchase price or it shows up on Disney+. Patience is a virtue.

When I was watching Mandalorian & Grogu with my dad & his gf, they didn't even play any movie trailers. So I was still playing on my phone (Sonic CD, not relavent, but it's one of the few good movile games I think) not even realizing the movie started already. I partially blame the movie since it didn't even have a proper intro, but it was an odd experience.

The price, the crappy food and the fact that the audience has been one entitled and rude. It’s should be a great experience for all, not just some. That’s what really sucks!!

Same here man. I miss the good old days when they are NO SMARTPHONES, TABLETS OR INTETMET and we can enjoy the movie in theaters without being spoiled or ruined by RUDE & OBNOXIOUS LOUD PEOPLE!!! Recently, whether you watching an action, horror, adventure or thriller, THEATER IS ALWAYS LOUD AS HELL THAT YOU CAN'T ENJOY THE DAMN MOVIE!!!

Ok, who needs a whole restaurant for a fucking movie? In my country (Argentina) is simple as shit, you buy the ticket before the movie starts, you get some popcorn or a soda… and you sit and watch the whole thing, there is no "In between pauses for snacks". What are people really that desperate for something to eat that they can't buy it BEFORE the movie starts? It just sounds overly complicated. Why do you need to pause in mid movie for something? sounds like there is a lack of attention spam with that system.

10-15 years ago I was going to movies all the time. Now I go to 1 or 2 a year. The linchpin for me was when I tried to order a movie with the app and now they have an "online reservation fee". So you are charging me to make things easier for you? Get fucked.

I disagree 1000% with the reserve seating aspect. That is the best part about modern movie theaters by far. Do you remember having to show up before a big movie hours in advance to wait in line so you can get a good seat…? What a joke.

Also- after the death of many chain artisan theaters that created the "dine in" experience that the corporate conglomerate theaters lifted off of their corpse, the thing that replaced the old school "dollar theaters" for late run post theaterical release movies with smaller screens and lower audio setups are still to this day alive in the replacement that are the art theaters and the indie alternative theaters. Drive in theaters are still alive and the best choice, because unlike everything else during the farce of the pandemic, the drive in was BOOMING. Great food for a fair price, local food trucks, you can smoke in your car and not bother anyone, and everything is 4K digital on the projection side with modern releases with digital audio over short range low band FM. You really can't beat it if there's a classic they're rescreening or a modern release you actually want to see at a drive in.

Our local theaters are amazing. Huge reclining seats with enough room for people to walk no matter how much it’s extended, seat warmers.

But AMC and Regal absolutely suck. The only ones that stay in business have to be at least 30 miles away.

I'm literally not going to the theater as often because (1) the standard theater picture sucks… the picture is dark because the bulbs probably need to be changed – and image quality can be fuzzy looking. It's like fast food where you get a squished sandwich that looks nothing like it should – and nobody seems to care. (2) the commercials suck worse than ever because they're bigger and louder in the theater. And the people yackin' on their phones aren't much better (3) the chairs suck – they can be broken and aren't even that comfortable (4) the movies themselves are derivative and often unoriginal. I don't often take a chance on a movie – because of the reasons I just said but also because the movies themselves seem to be less inspired.
I agree with James 100%: if the theater companies want to make more profit, heck even survive into the future, they need to laser focus on the basics. Offer only a few food options, and focus on the basics of the experience (picture, food quality, comfort) because what's going on these days just isn't working.
