   When you announced this series I was brainstorming what you would do in Warwickshire, as a local I've spent more time in Warwick Castle than I care to admit (and watch the Trebuchet display a ridiculous amount of times) I cannot tell you what a joy it is watching the "behind the scenes" set-up and firing.

    There is a version that instead of throwing the rope with the projectile it uses something like a shepherd sling, it rests the projectail in a pouch with 2 ropes (1 on each side) connected to the pole, when it gets to a certain point in the arc it automatically releases one side of the ropes letting the projectile loose without losing the pounch. They could use it to launch a bunch of loose rocks to pelt the targeted area instead of a single big projectile, good for crownd control, just aim for the middle of an army and hit a bunch of people with rocks

    This has to be one of my all time favourite / favorite* Tom Scott videos! For several reasons….

    1. I took my husband to Warwick castle in 2009, before I emigrated, and it is one of our most memorable days out. Not least because of the torrential rain and sheltering in the garden's ice store for 45 minutes, but especially for the trebuchet.
    2. For those familiar with the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), my husband was also known as the Earl of Warwick for his Kingmaker-like role.
    3. Medieval weaponry is simply awe-inspiring.

    Kids in the counterweight may have been a way to add weight to the counterweight while keeping the job of the winders lighter. A self loading counterweight.

    I got to see that trebuchet fire in the 2010s. They did a flaming ball that time and I didn’t have time to tour the castle but I went for the trebuchet.

    I remember seeing this thing fire back in 2008 as a student visiting from the US. One of the highlights of the trip.

    why does this trebuchet fire the rope together with the projectile while i have seen other trebuchets that have the rope on one side connected to trebuchet and it stays on after firing?
