The bit about taking something away from someone because it makes them happy reminded me of the Far Side cartoon with the caveman watching a bird, trying to flap his arms and fly, fails, and builds a bow and arrow to shoot the bird.

I had a teddy bear. I so desperately wanted this teddy bear, and I asked for it when I was 7, and I was told no, you won't look after it. But then I had a really bad accident and when I woke up in hospital the next day (xmas day) all the kids in the hospital had that teddy bear I had been asking for, including me. I kept that teddy bear for a long time, but one day I lost everything I owned. 2 weeks later I walked into a opportunity shop (secondhand stuff) and there was my teddy bear (not the same one I carried for all those years, but the same teddy, from the same year.) so I bought that teddy and kept him for many years until I had a baby, and I gave my baby my teddy.
I also find comfort in a purring cat.

It's not necessarily because they lack they lack comfort themselves and don't want someone else to have it. It could just be because they think the teddy bear is stagnating their development or something.Ā
