When you look back it seemed like so much went down in 1979. I vividly remember Three Mile Island and the Hostage Crisis. Fun fact, the US Embassy had been briefly occupied on Feb. 14 by the Iranians in what was called the Valentine's Day incident. Several equally noteworthy events missed here, the Iranian revolution on Feb. 4; the deadliest US aviation accident in Chicago on May 29; the assassination of Lord Mountbatten who was killed Aug. 27 when the IRA blew up his boat; the seizeure of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudia Arabia by militants on Nov. 20; and the attack on the US Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan on Nov. 21 by a mob who believed the US had attacked the mosque. Several people died, the embassy was burned, and the surviving staff had to be rescued after being trapped inside while the building burned.

Good job to the Iranian students. Iran is still oppressed because of Khomeini.

Most significant event in 1979 for me was being born in February and having life threatening surgery a few months later. Thankful for the people letting me live a happy childhood in the 1980s!

Sad it was also the year Ted Cassidy from the Adddams Family tv show died. Same year with John Wayne died.

I'm fascinated by 1979 and have been for a very long time. I was 6 years old back then. It was the first year my toddler brain reliably began recording and analyzing all the stuff around me. From a historical perspective it was an exact fulcrum point in American history between the socially turbulent late 60s and the relative calm of the late 80s/early 90s, when the Cold War promptly ended. What a time to be part of humanity. I'm so glad I was around to take it all in, even if it was through the underdeveloped lens of a kindergartner who just wanted to play with his Star Wars action figures.

I can't remember if I saw The Jerk in our little theater . Movies were 99 cents and 25 cents for popcorn, with free refills. But about that time we were getting cable. And that meant HBO. Back when HBO was great . I was in 9th grade. 1979 was a wonderful year. But the 80s😎😎😎

The late 70's was my "Golden" era, ending the decade as a 12 year old. About the only worldly events that occurred in my life happened in having my first bedroom to myself with boardgames and my "stuff", a baseball diamond and MLB baseball, and what TV shows would be on TV. I rode my bike, discovered albums and looked forward to Sunday dinner at Grandmas. I feel as though a lot of this is gone forever in this modern era?! Funny, I dint think we ever realize we are living in the best moments of our lives, when they are happening, just fortunate that mine happened at the time that they did!!
