Weird History | May 19, 2026

Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in the 1960s? Timeline is the Weird History channel’s prestige documentary series that examines history, decade by decade and year by year, covering the people, news, culture, sports, and entertainment that defined the past and shaped the world we live in today. In this episode we look at 1968, the year Martin Luther King was assassinated, George Foreman won Olympic Gold, and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood made its debut.

So which events from 1968 interest you the most? Let us know in the comments!
(Much like real history, this video was produced entirely by human beings.)

I lived with my family in Hawai'i for the last several years of the 1960s. Because satellite television was in its infancy, there was frequently a one week delay before news got to us.

Given the chaos happening on the mainland and beyond, that isolation was like heaven.

I am disappointed that the incident of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico 🇲🇽, which involved the 2 blacks runners Tommie Smith & John Carlos – I hope I got their names right – were not mentioned/included in this. That was another significant incident in 1968.

The Monkees TV show ended its only two-year series run in March 1968. Beatles released the White Album in November. How could you leave THAT out? Charlie Manson and "Family" were living at Dennis Wilson's house that summer. In August, they moved to Spahn Movie Ranch. The U.S. minimum wage in 1968 was $1.60/hour, roughly equal to $12.00 – $14.81 today. A school lunch commonly cost 35-cents. (Nobody in my school got a free lunch that I ever saw. We all paid with coins.) The 40% silver Kennedy half dollar coin was still minted in 1968 and continued until the next year.

Important yet heartbreaking event on January 20th: Roman Polanski weds Sharon Tate in London. Less than a year later, she was savagely murdered with 4 people at her home in Benedict Canyon…

60 minutes has hid behind journalism while hating this nation faithfully for nearly 60 years. No country is beyond criticism, but it was all Mike Wallace ever knew how to report. One of the biggest A–holes to ever stand in front of a camera.

"The 1968 Casiguran earthquake occurred on 04:19:22 local time on August 2 with a moment magnitude of 7.6 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). The thrust earthquake's epicenter was in Casiguran, Quezon (now part of Aurora province). A small non-destructive tsunami was generated and at least 207 people were killed. The majority of the deaths occurred in the collapse of a six-story building in Manila."

"The Dasht-e Bayaz and Ferdows earthquakes occurred in Dashte Bayaz, Kakhk and Ferdows, Iran in late August and early September 1968. The mainshock measured 7.1 on the moment magnitude scale and had a maximum perceived intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale. Damage was heavy in the affected areas with thousands of lives lost in the first event and many hundreds more in the second strong event."

You guys do a great job on these videos. Just thought I'd point out , though, that it's Bill MasterTON, not MasterSON of the Minnesota North Stars, that tragically died from a head injury suffered during a hockey game.
