Northern soul is amazing but storm in heaven is a masterpiece

I bought A Northern Soul because of On Your Own and always couldn’t stand So It Goes coming on right after it. I thought the song was annoying for some reason. I sold the album. But of course I bought it back again and just in the last few years So It Goes has become my favorite Verve song of all time. Love how Richard’s voice soars over McCabe’s rolling arpeggiation and the snapping/thump timing of the drums. And of course Richard’s lyrics are timeless and so heartfelt

Good album but the production is very lacking, which comes as no surprise as Owen Morris was the producer .

I think the main reason I rank the Verve now as probably my number 1 band of all time through out any era of music is because I've found no other band tears me up no matter how many times I hear certain songs especially played live. Tears of joy. The way Ashcroft conveys such passion, conviction and anguish as authentically as he does is like no one other singer I've heard. Which is not say many others don't or can't do the same cos there are many who certain can and do it's just the way he does it I find especially impactful.
And then there's the band itself that just elevates the whole thing to a level that cannot be achieved in the same way without them. Even though Ashcroft by himself is good enough to do the songs justice the Verve together just amplify it ten fold.

First heard this album at my dealers house. He had an incredible sound system and we were taking bong rips listening to this incredible album. I went to the record store (Salt City CD’s – SLC UT) and bought it immediately. Verve instantly became my favorite band of all time. Same thing happened with Permission To Land. lol.

Great album to review Justin, it reminds a bit of Free back in the day. Did you see them play Life's an Ocean on Jools?

early verve is amazing.. the psychedelic guitar work and the shear amount of space that McCabe could consume with his guitar was incredible. so much better than bitter sweet

I went to Europe right when this record came out, started in London. Bought it on a whim. It was my companion throughout that trip which took me down through continental Europe all the way to Sevilla. Made me a Verve fan for life. Learned about Eddie Hazel and early Funkadelic from reading an interview with McCabe that took me on a deep dive into funk. I like both sides of the band. If they could balance it again and make a 5th I would be there.

I have never agreed with an opinion more unanimously than I agree with Justin Hawkins' adoration of this album. The Verve were the best thing going. A Northern Soul was their finest release. A New Decade and Life's An Ocean are the 2 superlative tracks on this masterpiece which has many other compositions that Oasis would have murdered each other for. Nick McCabe is the all-time Maestro. Might have been covered before in the 539 comments, but vibrato is the word you are looking for warble or wobble or whatever word you used to describe what Richard's voice does. I agree, this is a classic album that had/has almost no play in the states. I have zero recollection of how it found it's way into my collection. All I know is that it is beautiful.

The Verve was so good, they should compile a b-sides album from the Northern Soul and Urban Hymns era (like No Come Down is for the early period). And throw in a few unreleased tracks like the incredible All Ways Are Maybes.

Once i realized that Peter haye´s style is a mix of Mccabe and Ashcroft, the world was never the same to me.

I bought the History single when it came out. It had a great B side called back on my feet. I then bought the Northern Soul album and 30 years later it's still my favourite possession.

Life's An Ocean is easily one of the best songs of the 90's, if not ever.

The greatest band of the decade. All of them are incredible players. McCabe's on another planet entirely. Convinced me to play guitar in a much freer way, free from the fear of mistakes. Life's an Ocean live on Later with Jools changed my life. Love them. The songs are simple, but they're jamming it, so they were different every night. They went on and made it up, which takes incredible confidence. And McCabe's playing through two sets of amps, fading between delayed washes of sound. Insane.

I will always go back to this album and urban hymns. Also suede dog man star. Nothing like them

A Storm In Heaven is my fav…but a Northern Soul is moody as fuck and I love it. Owen Morris’s finest work as far as production goes. Oh yeah Nick McCabe sounds epic. Stormy Clouds is prob the best track.

Justin you are a groundbreaking great singer and the cream like you, Richard, mc cabe and the verve are brilliant. Not many truely great artists come out but for me Hawkwind, Joe Cocker, the Animals, Prince and Layne and Alice in Chains and Prodigy and a few others were truely original and great however some of the solo. Albums by Bill Ward the drummer from Black Sabbath werent heard but arent metal but some hugely original genius.

I bought this on cassette way back when, and spent a whole summer of unemployment going for walks by the sea with this purring away in the background on my Walkman…I would have bet everything I had (not much when I was out of work 🤣) that they were going to be taking over the world. First 2 Verve albums were truly immense!

Stormy clouds is a phenomenal song and it feels like it couldn't have been made at any other time. The band at their peak and just going with the flow, reaching heights that will never be reached again.
