Hi Friends,
This week I wanted to share my thoughts on the viral TikTok prank of men calling their friends to say goodnight. The range of reactions is as fascinating as it is satisfying and I hope you enjoy the set. If you know someone you love that isnβt used to getting a good night send them one to keep it going.

I am an adult woman and while watching this, I couldn't hold back tears. Many societies are so cruel to men, making them hate themselves for having normal human insecurities and needs. When talking to my male friends I constantly think about how to show them support in the right way, how to be more empathic. It's not always easy between men and women, but we need to be more open and vulnerable to each other.

Makes me super thankful for my best friend, who is online only and lives halfway cross the country, but we talk every day, wish each other good night, and have shared a lot over the years.

Heβs so funny I forget that heβs completely clean. The fact that he talks about things that everyone knows about makes standup for accessible rather than if he was just talking about his personal life.

I'm really proud of my friends in my teens and 20s. I think it's a culture thing, lots of hipster types I knew were easy with the words "I love you" and meant them. We all looked out for each other and weakness evoked care and concern, not ego. Dudes who didn't really carry themselves like that sort of self-selected out of the group.
I also had great role models on TV, thanks to some creators like Bill Lawrence, for example. Brotherly love is for blood and non-blood, and watching friendships like Turk and JD on Scrubs, or everyone on Ted Lasso- gives continuous examples of the virtues of vulnerability and the self-isolation of ego.

Something I really liked last year before I had to move is my roommate was a lot more willing to be lighthearted or say stuff like good night. One time I woke up from a nap in the shared room and he said βdude you looked snug as a bug in a rugβ LIKE HOW IS THAT NOT PEAK MALE FRIENDSHIP????? I MISS THAT MAN IM SO MAD I HAD TO MOVR

I actually saw a sad one of this prank, where it turns out the guy that made the call to his friends passed away unexpectedly a few days after making the prank. His wife that had him do the prank was so happy that she had him do it because he was able to tell all of the people in his life that he loved them before passing. It was actually really beautiful and heartbreaking.

Ohh women go through the same. I had one friend I met when I was 14 she was 12 she was the only person I trusted with anything and she past away young. And I realized I never made another friend like her. And I don't trust anyone enough to have that type of friendship with. So women can also be those 8 yr old little weirdos π Josh is so good at talking about human behavior!

Josh, You have the gift and the talent of making people laugh, but I just subscribed because of this video. It took me through a roller coaster of emotions and put a tear in my eyes. The message was beautiful and so was your delivery. Youβre an amazing writer- the intellectual (my favorite comedian) Eddie Murphy of our time.

This audience, man! You know who the comedian is; its the guy with the microphone in his hand!
Now, check your hand; if the only thing you find is your sixth drink of the night, it time to shut the fuck up. You can laugh! But your voice is annoying as shit in shoe treads, and y'all need to shut it. π

One of my bros in high school in the 90s turned to me one day and just said "I love you bro" and I was so shocked I said it back. Since then I've made it a point to tell my good bros that I love them…47 years old now and something that started when I was 16 is still going on thanks for my bro being brave enough to tell a friend how much he cared about them. Love you Scotty!

I also enjoy watching vids of men kidnapping each others children and pets on tik tok without telling each other like they have legal right to do this. Its always okay, but the confusion and reasoning the kidnapping friend has to justify why he didnt have to tell him is so funny. The other dude is always like "okay"

Men deserve a safe place with their homeboys. Its just as important as it is for women to have girlfriends. And they actually have come a long way. I know more emotionally mature men now than i did five years ago. They definitely should be given more grace. The patriarchy has psychological harmed them as well. Its sad when a man break downs and he goes straight to punching the wall because he feels like he isn't allowed to cry or talk about how he feels. Lets take care of each other more.

It's insane how the typical solution to male loneliness is women. Like, wtf! Males should fix male loneliness. Women have ENOUGH to do. Kay thanks. One person can't possibly ground you. A small group is needed. Stop being your repressed fathers and grandfathers and selectively share yourself with those you trust. Yeah, you may get hurt – but that's the game, that's life. Embrace it. Live. Live your one life.

Making friends as an adult man, and even moreso keeping them, is a difficult thing to do. Life has a tendency to get in the way at many opportunities, and it takes a lot of effort to keep things going in the face of it.

As a woman who grew up chatting for hours on the phone with her friends, I'd be a bit shocked and maybe worried if a friend called me out of the blue to wish me good night. Build up to that with smaller, less out-of-character steps, folks! π You know, like maybe call to invite your friend to grab some drinks on Friday and then say good night.
