Finding cheap hay for our cattle is a balancing act. See how we source affordable feed for our herd in this look at farm costs.
Managing a farm requires keeping operational expenses low, and feed is often the biggest line item. In our community, we have a high percentage of second homes, which creates unique opportunities for sourcing supplies. This video explains how we leverage those local dynamics to secure affordable feed while continuing our cattle farming operation.
Understanding proper livestock management means knowing exactly what your inputs cost. We break down the math behind our purchasing, specifically how we calculate that one heifer is equivalent to 75 hay bales. If you are interested in the economics of small-scale agriculture or want to see how we handle our winter supply, this footage shows the process.
Subscribe for weekly farming and agricultural tips, and tell us in the comments if you want to see more of our daily routine with the animals.

Long time listener first time caller, idk about Vermont but in Nh you can get an extra 2 weeks or so with a muzzleloader. Took me about a year and a half of almost nighty practice to feel comfortable to hunt with a bow. I don't really like hunting but my stepdad said it best "Food costs dollars, bullets cost cents". Stay cool buddy.

Bingo and Bluey staring right into the camera.
Bingo: "He thinks we are stupid."
Bluey: "Yeah, like we're going to get caught on camera. Alert the herd. No chicken feed today."

I'll never forget as a kid I put the mineral block in the wrong spot and had to go move it after the cows licked it like crazy. It was nasty and full of slobber and my Uncle Bob who was the farmer laughed his head off at me. Gross memory seeing your video LOL

Barberries are not poisonous they are very much so edible and are similar to a cranberry early settlers used to plant them and make jam from them until the us government banned the planting of the common Burberry in 1918 known as the barberry eradication program and ran from 1918- 1980. Japanese barberry and European barberry have been started to be banned in most states between 2018 and 2022

15:46: the way you just casually grabbed her horn. That's a skill. :') On another cow: Elvis is SUCH a good boy. š„¹ I wish he could stay. AND it's such a nice thing to see a wild owl.
Also, I am HEAVILY against hunting, but at least you realize that a clean kill is better than injuring an animal and letting it roam and suffer.
