I was surprised that you didn't discuss the cabal of extremely powerful, conservative men who are Catholic, e.g. Leonard Leo, Bill Barr, Peter Thiel. Wouldn't that be a strong – and opportunistic – incentive for J.D. Vance to join that particular club? Also curious to know what Michael knows about Agnus Dei.

Per Google AI: "Vladimir Putin frames himself as a defender of traditional Christian values, using the Russian Orthodox Church to legitimize state power and sacred warfare." Trump supporters, including Vance, would like something similar in the U.S. with Trump and an American Evangelical Church. How dare Zelensky disrespect Putin in the field and Trump in the Oval Office.
I suspect Vance went Catholic because of the intellectual tradition in the conservative movement. Not only will Vance have to square that with a non-believing wife (C.S. Lewis did it?) and evangelical base but I suspect his high church sympathies were behind his little spat with the pope. Good luck with all that.

"Hillbilly Elegy" was not worth reading, and "Communion" sounds like drivel. And that book cover: no wonder it's a stock image of some random unidentifiable church. He couldn't actually put a Catholic church there because it would offend the Evangelicals. And Michael needs to brush up on the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism, which is crucial to any discussion here. In Catholicism, the Catholic's relationship with God is mediated by the church; in Protestantism, the individual has a direct, unmediated relationship with God. I would guess, however, that Michael does know more about religion than JD does, which sounds like nothing.
