This Is Exactly WHY Music Has Just Gone To Sh*t.
Thank you all so much for getting this channel to 300k subscribers! This was a big milestone for me, I didn’t think we would hit before the end of this year, but we have and I’m incredibly grateful. Onwards with my favourite video of the week, comments day. Today’s first question may have triggered a rant from me about how music is written these days and how it’s so much worse and cynical than you actually think.
This video was posted momentarily yesterday but then YouTube limited it, we had to appeal to get it back to normal. We had to mute all the swearing just to make sure we could publish it.

For the one about tickets, I'm pretty sure some ticketing companies (Live Nation for example) have exclusive deals with venues now, so it would almost be impossible to cut out the middle man with big shows.

Justin, I know how difficult it is to earn a living. I believe anyone new to the job market learns very rapidly that it's who you know, not how qualified, hard working or good you are at your job that permits you to survive, by being able to afford rent & nourishment. I worked double shifts & still nearly starved to death, & became seriously ill. It even became worse. It takes a village to save a life & they did. Enough said. I remain grateful & live accordingly. There are so many people that just do not realize the whole structure of the world we live in. I believe you do. Barbara

I definitely think this is why artists like Ren do so well. Itโs the perfect storm of very talented artists and being so starved for something new/different than the cookie cutter music thatโs been produced recently.

๐๐ปYASS Thankyou for eloquently putting into words exactly why I refuse to listen to the radio & haven't been able to stomach listening to most new "pop" music for at least a decade๐
When business & industry becomes more focused on marketing schemes & making more of the same boring slop (& only supporting what's already sold before as a safer bet) rather than being led by actual talent & ART & new ideas, then culture & the whole world suffers.
I think the same thing's happened in Hollywood too so I rarely watch new films, I still prefer independemt & retro "trash" cinema from the 70's or 80's because even it's "bad", it has more heart & is usually more original than anything we get to see today๐
Maybe it's just Capitalism itself that's killing art ๐

Crap music is a sign of the times, today nobody really values music because it's free. It always has been on some level, the radio always played it, but it was programmed and you got tastes of it. We used to buy music and we got at any given time Lionel Richie, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, the police ,Quiet Riot, Rush, the scorpions, Van Halen, Metallica and guns n roses. No YouTube, no internet… music was a premium commodity… we had great Classic albums because only the bands that could really sell, really write and really perform rose to the top…does anyone listen to the radio anymore, or is it taylor made playlists on spotify… nothing new or creative comes out of an echo chamber except senility and hearing loss

I agree about harmonising, it's a beautiful thing when it works. My brother could never harmonise with me. He would sing lead and then I'd come in to harmonise and he'd just follow what I did, it got very frustrating. Some of the most beautiful harmonising I think is on 'Because' by The Beatles, sounds beautiful. So glad I stumbled upon your channel as I've been feeling really depressed lately and you've really made me laugh and smile and appreciate music again. Thank you

Thank you Justin. I've been a fan of The Darkness since i was a wee lad. I've felt that in recent years people have been either willfully ignorant to or complacent in their criticism of the state of music nowadays. I was starting to worry i was a cynical bore but it seems i'm not alone. So much of it really is shit isn't it? Love your channel! Big hugs from Germany.

Regarding the music as hobby vs career thing. I do think you're oversimplifying things just a bit. Wanting a career in music isn't just about getting rich. It's about wanting an audience, wanting to achieve something ambitious, or wanting to be able to sustain yourself with the only skill set you've invested heavy time in. Like for myself, I'm 37, I work in kitchens, I have no career prospects that will ever lead to retirement or even home ownership. I spend all of my free time developing my skills in songwriting, singing, production, mixing, mastering, I'm even learning vfx and animation so I can make my own music videos. And I just know that all this effort is going to result in like, 350 plays over two years, and it's depressing. I wish I had the support and resources that a career level artist has because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that lots of people would love my music if they heard it, but when you're just some random kitchen troll with Ableton it's basically impossible to break through the noise

Nothing new under the sun. Music is a reflection of our current decline in society, no creative, individual, autonomous, authentiy allowed on controlled media platforms, Communists love groupthink, control, sameness, mediocrity …. We are at the end of time, where everything is about to change forever….Jesus Christ, the real King and only Saviour of your soul, is coming back, but first the Anti Christ is coming to decieve the whole world for 7 years, the time of Gods Judgement on an unbelieving world….choose wisely Justin ๐๐โฃ๏ธ

I toured the US in the early 00's with bands playing basement shows and such and.. it seemed to work fine.. no one made money off it but everyone got something out of it that was bigger than money. I miss those days and even seeing some of the bands that have come back around lately in bigger venues is just not the same as it was back then on so many levels.

Refering to what you said at 6:25 I have a real issue with people saying that you should persue singing only if you already have natural talent. I was born without any particular vocal talent and was completely "tone-deaf" but I found put you can practice your hearing like any other skill. I was discouraged for so many years by tons of people saying you're either born a singer, or you're not. Don't listen to that people. Singing is a hard skill to learn but it is the same as playing an instrument in terms of progress and experience. Keep singing!

Music suffered death by nostalgia…also MTV squeezed the entry pipe where as before you had 100's of radio stations that could have brokered a new sound.

Mainstream Top 40 radio hasn't had a decent rock-oriented hit since "Cool Kids" by Echosmith. That was back in 2014.
