Something I also find fascinating about this show's writing is that a lot of the "real world" dialogue would fit in the sitcom setting. Seriously, remove the music and add the laugh track to some of the more serious scenes and they would easily scan into sitcom bits. Especially when they're hiring the assassin and he keeps telling Allison to shut up, it's still perfectly structured like a joke.

What this does for the story is seamlessly joining the two directing styles to make every character feel like the same person in no matter the context. Patty is always quippy, Allison always makes a comment when someone says something stupid. It's a juxtaposition between the tonal whiplash of the style change and the undeniably consistent characters.

I had no idea of this show going into and the switch up between sitocom and drama hit me like a train, i was hooked. Each season was just as good if not better than the last. I think this is a underatted gem and worth the watch.

Having had my wife abort my kid, cheat on me, divorce me and take 50% of my medical retirement when i was in Iraq getting shot at/blown up or in the hopsital getting 13 surgeries…..and having had everyone blame me for the divorce ("its not right to expect her to take care of some disabled veteran for the rest of his life") i dont belive any of this feminst fantasy slop BS.

This is just another example of the patriarchy and how all females are fodder weather any one wants to admit it or not its true .females are the most subjugated peoples since the beginning of time an i don't see any one asking for recompense that it the most extreme horror of the entire human race .

I'm at the halfway point of the video (more or less) and I can't stop feeling bad about how these jokes in the "sitcom world" land so well, goddammit.

PS: I finished the video and I feel worse… Great video btw.

On 53:59 one can see the center picture on the board is Allison. The picture is taken when she is focused on something else, her eyes proof that she's taken off guard, her stance distant, scared, distrustful. It shows how invasive kevin is and implies a much darker theme regarding the extent of the abuse Allison has been going through

Its very interesting how the soundtracks work.
At a certain time, allison was left alone and the laughing track died down, slowly sounding like it was a fake laugh all along, paired with a cough (now that could have been a classical sitcom detail or explaining the sickness of being in a relationship such as this). But also, when she finally asks for a divorce, the laugh track at first died down and then a distinct "woo" was heard. Almost as if there was a supporter within the sum of people, who's retaliations were drowned by the overwhelming laughing track.

Omg, I feel so bad for Allison. I swear to heavens that Kevin guy is HORRIBLE, he doesn't deserve any of her love and unconditional support, damn.
It makes me so angry how there are people (of any gender) that are like this in real life, truly infurating.

Holy cow! I have never seen any of your content before and just sort of stumbled on this one. Let me just say it was absolutely one of the best work of any media I have had the privilege of experiencing 😂🎉

Im gonna share and follow for sure.

Too much analysis. It's not so complex. This nothing more than a feminist wet dream trying to be clever. Take the universally oafish cut and paste male caricature, so popularized be the media since the '70's and pander to the modern female hate mob by tossing in a ☠️☠️☠️☠️ fantasy. That's all this is, validating feminist manufactured hatred by killing the ridiculous fantasy stalking horse women dreamt up in their "female empowerment" sessions (Tik-Tok) 🙄

51:39, it’s also important to note that earlier when Alison made a joke that was objectively funny “karma in my first like; first life ?” The audience laughed. But when Kevin cut in “Alison” like a warning they stopped abruptly only to continue after Kevin demeans her.

I think that you’re right in that the laugh track is “society” but just like society there’s different kinds of people, the laugh track who laughs at Alison’s jokes are likely other Alison’s, silenced by Kevin harshly and abruptly, while the laugh track that follows after he demeans her is other Kevins.

another streaming failed crap normalizing an idea that a person who you don't like deserves to die….
being an asshole doesn't mean someone deserves death.
no logic from teh start because THERE ARE DIVORCES. and any implication that this is not an option instantly makes that show just another shitty hate propaganda, removing any responsibility from women because MEN ARE OPRESSORS,
    jesus christ

just a waste of such a cool idea of deconstructing a sitcom for such a crappy plot…

no surprises that show didn't live up to season 3, like any show designed for MODERN AUDIENCES…

I love that this video took off. I’ve been watching for a while now but it’s clear how passionate you are about media analysis and I’m glad it’s finding an audience that's even bigger than before ❤

Did anyone else think the ending, where Allison and Patty say “let’s die together”, while sitting together on the front stoop, heavily smacked of Thelma and Louise? 🩷❤️‍🩹💖

This genuinely was such an unexpected (as I’d never heard of the show when I clicked on the video), and fun dissection and discussion of this series. I’ve also never seen one of your videos before @T1J, but I’ll def be watching more now! Thanks for this fun and enjoyable watch!

The laugh track was the personification of Allison’s internal thoughts (she felt like everyone was laughing at her).
By the time she demanded divorce, she had grown a backbone, and some self-confidence, and the laugh-track was now “on her side”.

Imagine a concept like this but for sitcom husbands I think we have all seen Rochelle in everybody hates Chris or lois in Malcom in the middle where the wife is insufferable for everyone and the husbands are emasculated to the point where they are always endearing to a fault I think it’d be one hell of a show idea just like this one

Kevin starts the fire, the fire in Allison to leave him, the fire to cook pork, the heat in the oven, the fire that caused blackout. It was Kevin all along.

I also noticed that the show does a sort of twist on a trend I’ve noticed. When a woman in a shoe or even in real life wants to be independent, she often has to overcompensate while men can simply decide that on a whim with the same conditions as their female counterparts. This results in women in media often being either the ‘submissive love interest’ or the ‘wild warrior girl’, because women’s independence can often never just be not having a partner. The show displays having complex female characters while having Alison find independence while still having a friendship. It’s nice to see women having freedom in media without having to cut off everything else.

Everyone in the show seem to suck from what I’ve seen well besides patty

Allison while the victim wants to kill her husband and has a affair

Kevin is a just a all around asshole and his buddy

That old guy goes along with their stuff and is mentally like 12

    Side note

I do not think the friend was in the wrong when he confronted Allison
She was completely at fault she initiated contact and took the phone from him he tried to get it back I’ll be it
It was wrong that he choked her

But she was at fault 2000 %

i very recently finished watching this series with a friend, it's so good. we had so much fun thinking about all the different characters and what the sitcom world was supposed to represent. and Allyson and Patty's relationship :') so much happened each episode, we felt quite uncertain for all of s2 about what was actually going to happen.

we were so curious and afraid for ages about when Kevin would enter the "real" world – what he was actually like when everything wasn’t a joke anymore. we both yelped when we realised it was happening in the finale. i felt so anxious 😅

i think our main issue with Tammy was a behaviour she displayed a couple of times which seemed really controlling and possessive – when she told Allyson that she didn't like her (which is fine – we thought she communicated that quite maturely) and accepted that Allyson didn't really like her in return, but then asserted that since she was Patty's partner, Allyson had to back off, had to essentially stop spending time with Patty. she wasn't talking on Patty's behalf – Patty said herself that Tammy was jealous of Allyson, and maybe it was fair to a degree but the way she acted on it was still 😬 this was affirmed in some ways later when Neil likewise told Allyson that she had to leave Patty, that she was "ruining" her. it was written somewhat ambiguously until the finale whether Allyson truly was bad for Patty, whether Patty actually wanted to remain connected with her, but Patty obviously asserted her wants in the finale. we were glad Tammy seemed to at least respect Patty's wishes enough to end their relationship rather than forcing her to leave Worcester. it's understandable why she wanted to leave but it obviously doesn't change that Patty wanted to stay, rather than stay in their relationship.

i think overall we were just Team Patty Being Happy in the end heh (though we really liked the idea of Allyson/Patty)
