The story of Tim Lambesis, frontman of As I Lay Dying and creator of Austrian Death Machine, is one of the wildest, darkest, and most unbelievable tales in the history of metalcore. This video explores how a Christian metal icon—known for his faith-based lyrics, heavy breakdowns, and powerful stage presence—spiraled from fronting a Grammy‑nominated band into one of modern metal’s most shocking criminal scandals.

At the height of the 2000s metalcore wave, As I Lay Dying stood as one of the biggest names in Christian metal. Their frontman, Tim Lambesis, was admired for writing deeply emotional songs about faith, forgiveness, and redemption. But behind his public image, he secretly struggled with a crisis of belief, personal turmoil, and growing anger that led him down a dark path.

While leading As I Lay Dying, Lambesis started a parody side project called Austrian Death Machine—a thrash metal tribute to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s greatest one‑liners and 80s action movies. With song titles like Get to the Choppa, If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It, and It’s Not a Tumor, the band was meant to be a tongue‑in‑cheek joke celebrating over‑the‑top cinematic violence. Fans loved it. Critics praised its energy and humor. It looked like harmless fun.

Then, everything changed in 2013. In a story that stunned the entire metal community, Tim Lambesis was arrested for attempting to hire a hitman to murder his wife. Police revealed that the supposed “hitman” was actually an undercover cop. The arrest turned the parody of Austrian Death Machine into a chilling reflection of real‑life darkness. The man who once sang about faith and redemption was suddenly facing felony charges for soliciting murder.

The fallout was immediate. As I Lay Dying collapsed, fans were divided, and the metal world asked whether you can separate the art from the artist. In 2014, Lambesis pled guilty and served over two years in prison. Even more bizarre, during his arrest and sentencing, he managed to release another Austrian Death Machine album, Triple Brutal, through crowdfunding. The humor of the project—filled with cartoon violence and exaggerated bravado—felt disturbing when compared to the reality behind it.

After his release from prison, Lambesis attempted redemption, reforming As I Lay Dying and apologizing publicly. But controversy followed. In 2023 and 2024, he revived Austrian Death Machine again, releasing Quad Brutal on Napalm Records, sparking renewed debate about accountability, forgiveness, and whether his return to metal should be celebrated or condemned.

This documentary unpacks the entire saga—the rise, fall, and attempted comeback of Tim Lambesis. From Christian metal roots to steroids, ego, and a murder plot, we dive deep into how one man’s obsession with perfection, faith, and image turned into one of heavy metal’s darkest chapters.

Featuring the stories behind As I Lay Dying, Austrian Death Machine, and the shocking 2013 hitman sting, this is a cautionary tale about fa

well now… I've heard of As I Lay but have never listened to them or his other band. I think the only "Christian" metal I know of is Stryper and Fifth Angel. Guy sounds like a douche.

The fellow Americans playing "Christian" voted an Evil, corrupt dipshite as the president of the United States. There are no true Christians any longer. Just people wanting more money. It's all become twisted. As I LAY Dying is garbage

I forget the year but two shows were near me at the same time, one was As I Lay Dying with Demon Hunter as the co-headliner. The other was Flyleaf with 10 Years as the co-headliner.
My friend going with me chose Flyleaf/10 Years show so we went to that one. Flyleaf did not give a great performance (IMO) and I kinda wished we had seen AILD instead. Then the news came out.

He's a scumbag. Aside from him trying to murder the mother of his children, the guy sold an image of Christianity which he didn't practice. He's a a violent and insecure fraud of a man.
