All AI music is slop. Just because it sometimes makes music that really slaps doesn't mean that it doesn't also make plenty of garbage, so when it lands on the good stuff it's just by accident. Therefore the word "artist" does NOT at all apply to the people who make this, the correct title is "sloppist". If you make AI music you are not an artist, you are a sloppist.

So, how does it compare to a second hand NAS with streaming option…. Cost and effort wise

honestly might try this. its either that, rockbox my ipod mini, or buy one of those android sd card players from amazon. i love my ipod but i can't stand the way they handle adding music to it in 2026.

Ive went back to cd ripping and hosting my own server a few years back, just running from an old laptop that casually hosts from the corner of the room. Not sure why you went out and got a rasperry pi as an existing device with storage capacity is all u need. Over complicated it a bit for people not in the know. Plex is the way to go if you want to stop supporting spotify, netflix and the big streaming platforms so glad you putting it out there 👏

The problem is getting new music! The gem about dsp is the access to new music

I thought about this a while, step one teach musician to host their music, and sell them directly

Why not just put it on a $20 Memory Stick and cut out the wifi always on equation? Yes I know you if it's all FLAC files of everything under the sun that you will probably never listen to in your lifetime you might want a terabyte, but you get the idea. Personally I'm ok with 320bps MP3. I'm actually envisioning the Doctor Evil response…"You don't get it. You just don't get it!"

The slop on Spotify is getting worse. with every 14 year old with a computer trying to make music and spotify just dumping it on their subscribers. im almost done. the recommendations and the constant search for good music is getting so tedious. i must admit. im down to listning to round 50 albums and have not added one new song to a playlist in half a yar.
Spotify is elevator music. forgetable and not repeatable

I have a massive album/CD/digital music collection that replaces Spotify just fine without needing to spend a hundred dollars.

Great video! Your iPod series was a big reason for why i got into building my own server (home labbing). Plex is great for film and tv and those who are jus getting into personal servers. Though I reccomend checking out Navidrome, Imo it's a better experience for music. The initial setup can be a bit more complex that Plex, but it allows for a lot more custimisation and overall better library management. Excited to hear The Mixtape will be on bandcamp!

This only works though if you own the music. One of the main perks of Spotify for me is Release Radar and discovering new music. If I had to buy the music I stream I'd be spending £100's each month. So, I guess it depends on your Spotify usecase.

Been looking into this for a couple of months now tired of having 8 different subscriptions.
Going back to the sailing times, thanks to Overseerr, Radarr, Sonarr etc. I'm thinking about cutting off all those subscriptions, use the saved money to purchase albums to the artists directly every month 😉
