The White Stripes were a Detroit-based rock duo, formed in 1997 by Jack and Meg White. Their minimalist setup—just guitar, drums, and the legendary red-white-black color scheme—brought garage rock back to the mainstream. To keep the focus on their music, they famously disguised their marriage, posing as siblings, a myth that fascinated fans and fueled their mystique.

Jack White started as a drummer and Meg learned to play drums alongside him; the pair soon began writing and performing, building a following in local Detroit venues. Their raw sound and visual aesthetic set them apart. Early singles like “Let’s Shake Hands” and “Lafayette Blues” laid down their blues-punk foundation.

Breakthrough came with their third album, White Blood Cells (2001), featuring the hit “Fell in Love with a Girl.” Their 2003 album, Elephant, cemented their reputation, delivering global mega-hit “Seven Nation Army”—a riff now chanted in stadiums worldwide. The White Stripes earned multiple Grammy Awards, platinum records, and critical acclaim for their stripped-down, analog musicianship.

Following creative experiments on Get Behind Me Satan (2005) and a return to their heavy blues roots in Icky Thump (2007), the band was at the peak of their influence. However, Meg struggled with anxiety, and relentless touring took its toll. After canceling 2007 tour dates, the White Stripes quietly retreated from the spotlight.

They made a final appearance on TV in 2009, then announced their breakup in February 2011. Jack continued a highly active musical career with The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, and solo albums, while Meg left public life entirely. Their legacy is undeniable—iconic albums, unforgettable imagery, and a story brimming with myth, mystery, and pure rock energy. In 2025, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, sealing their status as one of the most distinct and influential bands of their generation.

Whether haunting sports stadiums or redefining the boundaries of rock, The White Stripes proved that less can be much, much more.

Meg was the perfect sort of drummer for that project, sort of like Dave Grohl in Nirvana. The typical “professional” drummer would have likely noodled too much…or not enough in an intentional way.

people always talk shit on Meg's drumming abilities—what you don't know is that Jack WANTED her to play simple drums. It was the whole idea of the band.

Great band and great live, I think they will be remembered better because they stopped at the height of their fame with solid albums and sold out tours before they went down the path many bands do and start releasing albums that are not as good and fans fall away..
They went out on their own terms and if Meg is as private a person as she seems then she would have been under a lot of pressure at times and is probably enjoying life away from the spotlight doing her own thing, Jack as we all know continues to do different music ventures and looks like he's always enjoying it so I think what they did is perfect.

Jack White’s role as the character Georgia in the 2003 film Cold Mountain was amazing. (That was the same year he and Meg appeared in Coffee and Cigarettes from James Jarmusch) At the time, I suspected he was thinking about a new career in addition to his music. Twenty years later I saw him in Killers of The Flower Moon and was equally impressed. I’ve been told that he appeared in multiple independent films over the years but I haven’t verified that.

Saw them in 2007 , three dates prior to them cancelling the rest of the tour. At the Oakfale in CT, with my daughter. Awesome show, one of best I have ever been too.
