In the 1980’s time was running out for Cannon Films in more ways than one, both for the company, the rights to make a Captain America movie and the Golan Globus partnership.
What followed was a series of false starts, script problems, director problems and budget problems all leading to the release of CAPTAIN AMERICA in 1990 or 1992, depending on where you lived.
Barely noticed, it was immediately derided as one of the worst comic book movies ever and has held that reputation. But Albert Pyun, the director, had his own cut of the film that he wanted everyone to see… and now they can!

Does the Pyun cut explain why his shield suddenly appeared when he was thawing from the ice even though he didn't have it in his possession since he got strapped to the rocket?

But comics commenting on modern issues (modern as when they were written) is clearly a completely new thing.
I'm being sarcastic to be clear. Cap comics continually have commentary on modern politics. Heck, Steve has abandoned his costume in disgust almost as much as Peter has decided to for other various reasons.
Heck. The crazy Cap (who was originally writen as Steve) were also quite political.

The original version of this movie has, despite/because of its cheesiness, had a special place in my heart since I first saw it/learned it existed when I was 14.
I wouldn't have known this cut existed if not for this video. I ordered a copy immediately. I can't believe what a difference it makes when filmmakers can just make the movie they envision. Highly recommend.
Thank you for doing this video!!

The 70's Cap films have a goofy charm ( and Christopher Lee!), while the 90's film is just kind of dreary.
Couple decent action scenes and the actor playing Cap really seems to be trying, but I'm highly skeptical that 13 extra minutes, some unconvincing aging makeup and some edits 'save' the 90's film.

I don't know what sort of award you should win for "licensed media ouroboros", but it should be heavy and impressive on any shelf.

HOW DID I MISS THIS EPISODE?…
@lipranditoys
January 15, 2026 at 1:15 am
I've seen the so called "director's cut". Calling it "good" wouldn't be fair, it tries, it tries to be more meaningful and more sensitive than the teatrical version, but misses the mark. The new editing can make some scenes more interesting, but completely ruins the pace and focus of the ending.
Plus there are inconsistencies, scenes that were shot to tell parts of the plot that are now left out of the movie, like the bomb in the climax, which suddenly disappears, nobody mentions it, but you can still hear it beeping when Red Skull dies…

Definitely dated as far as special effect and costuming go – plus the pace feels 80s even though it's 1990… However, the plot line and core story were great regardless! Puts great focus on the terrorist nature of Red Skull and axis power leftovers. The contemporary plot line didn't explore that vein enough. The Infinity Saga forced the plot of cap1 to be more background for the power of the Space Stone, tech created from it, and connection to Thanos, as opposed to the major plot point of the 90 version being to destroy America from within… Which, TBH, today – feels more real

Wait, are you telling me the studio took control of the superhero movie away from the director and actors who wanted to tell a good story, cut it to bits to turn it into a shallow 'product' to sell to kids and let the creatives take the blame when the project they actively sabotaged didn't meet their impossible expectations?
Well thank god that didn't happen again….and again…and again…and again…and again…and again…

2 things to note:
1) Cap punched ACTUAL Nazis. Not what the Democratic Party calls Nazis for the past 70 years, up to & including Dwight D Eisenhower. Yes, THAT Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe Eisenhower.
They were liars then, & they are liars now.
2) Gee, I wonder why we were in Korea & Vietnam? Could it be we were helping our allies from being invaded by their neighbors? Neighbors who were dedicated to the authoritarian, inhuman, genocidal ideology that is Communism?
If you honestly think there are Nazis in power today & the wars in Korea & Vietnam had some level of legitimacy, kindly fuck off.

OMG, I remember watching this movie one summer in high school when I was working at Blockbuster. Even back then I knew it was bad but could have been better. Definitely going to have to look into the Pyun cut.
Have you done a video yet on Roger Corman's Fantastic Four? Very campy, corny, and fun. Better than Captain America and the early 90s Supergirl movie we got. And it was never offically released. There was a great documentary about it several years ago called "Doomed!: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four".

It's sad that nowadays some people have taken to calling anything that they don't like Nazism. It's a fucking disgrace and has diluted the word and it does a disservice to the fight and the sacrifices that were made to defeat it. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️

I put this on two weeks ago and had to get the BluRay, it just arrived and we are watching it now, my spouse walked in on Cap. stealing a car by faking IBS. It is glorious. Will fit nicely on the shelf with the theatrical cut and the 1979 movies.
