The Unsolved Mystery of the Lead Masks Case | Tales From the Bottle

Qxir | November 20, 2025

We all love a good mystery. Here’s one where some people wear lead masks on their faces and die. Enjoy

“The Lead Masks Case (Portuguese: Caso das Máscaras de Chumbo) was a series of events which led to the death of two Brazilian electronic technicians, Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana who had last been seen by their family on August 17, 1966. Their bodies were discovered on August 20, 1966, and the cause of their deaths has never been determined.”

they could have taken DOM, NBOMes, lots of different phenethylamines, bromo-dragonfly or 2C-B-FLY; there are an insane amount of psychedelics that are very popular especially back then, people just want to believe mushrooms and acid are the only ones because they don’t want to admit their dealer would lie to them for extra money. literally hilarious how uneducated and ignorant half these comments are.

My theory is that they played a game of Rock Paper Scissors. Manoel used Paper, and Miguel used Rock.
This caused Manoel to exclaim " Paper destroy little rock! ", to which Miguel realized that something beat rock, causing an immediate heart attack in Miguel, killing him instantly.
After witnessing Miguel collapse on the floor and die, Manoel then proceeded to laugh at the corpse, before dying instantly himself, this time due to tripping slightly.

They were wearing the Lead Masks for the entire session as it was a strange variant, and costed 4.37$ on the Community Market.

You can overdose on LSD. It causes massive organ failure. If treated, it is survivable with little lasting effect. The main medical case I found on the subject involved three men who mistook the powdered LSD for coke. All three survived but had to be put into a medical coma. There are also people who have died from LSD at music festivals, although far more rare than other drugs.

this is one of the best cases ever for me. love it
also for people sugesting drugs or just two dudes getting high in the 60s: 66 was the height of the military dictatorship, known as…. "the lead years" (no pun intended it really is). taking drugs wasn't a regular thing, wasn't easy to come by, you could get arrested for basically anything and tortured and/or disappear. this includes just hanging out in a group of more than 3 people. the army could arrest you on this legal basis. so yeah, good luck getting high. Our 60s weren't like first world 60s
so, tbh, just two guys in a sewer slide cult. the capsules could just be rat poison. people poison each other with rat poison here all the time to this very day, so its common knowledge what would easily work. and it was legal for anyone at the time to buy it at any warehouse (now it's not, but you can still buy it. things are not as strict as back then at all)
btw, name of the rat poison? roughly translated: little lead
    and i'm not even kidding

Eleanor Roosevelt is actually the one credited with saying the “yesterday is history” quote. Even though most people believe it originated from Kung fu panda which is kinda funny

The note makes it look like somebody else wrote it as instructions. Or that they both had short memory issues, I mean… why on earth would you need to write down a checklist like that lol.

This is similar to the first murder scene in the 80s movie, Heathers. Two jocks tricked into setting themselves up in a gay love suicide pact. Ahhh, the 80s, when Men were men and Anything was possible…

I’m sorry but an Irishman telling me to avoid substance abuse is just the best way for it to happen. Like he literally has whiskey as blood and he’s telling me?
I understand the Irish typically nurse Bailey’s from their mother abd move on to spirits when they turn 4.

2 thoughts: 1) psychedelics and the extreme visuals they cause can make people vomit. there's a name for this reaction I can't recall. Seeing another comment about datura seems a likely candidate. 2) there's 1 antipsychotic drug that I know of that when my friends and I would take it (unprescribed) it was almost exactly like taking LSD. That drug was called serzone. Not sure if it was around in the 60s or in Brazil.

I agree with you, and am telling you so as instructed. See? I'm the smartest man alive.
Wait, what did you call us? Degenerates?!
I gave this irreplaceable fraction of my life, so you can have more algorithms, so the least you could do is give the insult some creativity? I thought you were Irish?

How did you figure out I'm a degenerate I've never even met you! This is unbelievable no person should be able to know what another person is without at least meeting them first that's just creepy.

It's Brazil. Very unlikely that they had any LSD or magic mushrooms. Think something local and easy to get for them. Kids even huff gasoline. Lots of things could be fatal in short order. Could be suicide. Could be a misguided religious accident. Could be other. No, we will not know without a proper autopsy, which didn't happen. Even if they had look when it was and again Brazil. We still would not know.
