The Unexpected History of CLUE: THE MOVIE (1985) & It’s 4 Different Endings

CLUE: THE MOVIE, released in 1985, was a bomb from day 1 at the box office but it’s path to that point was unconventional and involved the success of HALLOWEEN just a few years earlier.

Filmed with 4 different endings, one more than the 3 that were released, the director and some of the cast lay the failure of Clue at the feet of that gimmick.

But something magical has happened in the years since it’s release…

It baffles me how critics are the time didn't like it.
If it was modern critics? Sure. Modern critics score for crap like supporting their own politics/agenda despite that having NOTHING to do with quality or entertainment value. The same type of crap that sees something get like a 100% critic score on RT, while a 38% audience score, or vice versa.
But… critics before the 2010's largely actually reflected what viewers wanted/liked! I think theres a few movies like this… like Robin Hood Men in Tights? Cant think of any others off the top of my head.

You found the fourth ending? YES! May the fourth be with you!

It was so refreshing to get to 17:37 and see a bit of your life in the clip you're watching. Second YT clip I've seen in two days that have had Saginaw, MI in it somehow.

I was definitely one of those 90s kids who saw this movie a lot on cable, therefore it is a classic in my mind. I'm pretty sure its the first thing I'd ever seen Tim Curry and Madeline Kahn in.

My wife and I (born in ‘79 and ‘81) both watched Clue as kids and discovered our mutual love of the movie early in our relationship. Now we watch it a few times a year with our son who is 11. If you see it as a kid you’ll love it forever. Our most recent watch was two weeks ago :).

This movie is one of my core movies as a kid. The fact that it was interactive was absolutely amazing. I wish there were films that did things like this today. Going to multiple viewings to see or figure out the ending so good.

I remember feeling weirdly betrayed when I found out the woman who played Ivette wasn’t actually French. Of COURSE she isn’t, but when I saw it, I was like 6.

What killed this in theatres was the different endings. People didn't want to only get part of the experience.
If they'd released with all the endings, the way the DVD did, where it runs through each… that would have made it a success.

Why is it that every time something migrates from the UK to the US, they dumb it down because everyone assumes Americans are morons? We're not all Trump supporters, you know! Half of us are, yes, but the other half of us actually know what words like "Ludo" and "philosopher" mean. We're not even shocked to find out that "dumb" ends with a "b"!
