MAD SCIENTIST Dissect-an-Alien was just one of many Mad Scientist kits that had parents angry and wondering if Mattel was run by Satanists.

MAD SCIENTIST was just one brand, that came and went quickly, in a larger trend of gross out toys that included Garbage Pail Kids, Skateboard Smack Ups, Madballs and more!

I always wanted one of these but alas, those were boy toys. I did, however, get this grow your own dinosaur thing. I haven’t heard of it since I had it. It was pretty big. May have come out with the first Jurassic Park movie. You would use out these shapes in this flat corkboard material and put it together like one of those 3-D puzzles and set it up in the chamber where it would get wet and the pieces would swell kinda like a sponge but would dry hard in that swollen shape. Like some coral covered monstrosity of a fossil in SpongeBob. And the SMELL. I can almost recall it plainly. Anyone else remember this?

It was definitely a 90s thing too because I remember seeing advertisements for it while watching cartoons like the tales from the crypt cartoon and got my parents to buy me a kit. This was between 1996-1999

This is why I am a paying channel member. Thanks for reminding me of a cherished series of toys that I loved as a kid but haven't thought about in over 35 years. I am surprised that you weren't a fan too, though. I'm also surprised that you still have obscure but loved things from the good ol' days to spotlight but I'm glad you do

I had all of these gross toys! I was in love with boy toys and thankfully my parents obliged. I just found a bunch of garbage pail kids recently. As I look around my home as an adult I can safely say that my tastes haven't changed much. Lol

I wasn't very fond of these toys as a kid. I liked monsters and grotesque characters, had no problem if something wasn't "clean cut human hero" etc. But I always felt that toys about pouring slime and going through several steps like building up flesh to dissolve etc… it was too much work. I wanted cool monsters / characters I could bang together for my toys, and most of these felt like there was too much preamble to get to the fun parts. Still… I certainly have fondness for these times and these toys. A time where the nastier you went, the better. Even if it wasn't a very mature rebellion, it was still a fun one.

I had forgotten about these. But the ad with putting on the skin and dissolving it brought it back. Never had any of these, was never really in to sticky, slimy stuff.

Say, what was the toy line from the 90s where all of the figurines came in trash bags that dissoved under a tap?

I miss slime being a gross-out toy instead of the sensory stuff it's become. Gui Gui?! Why are you trying to make it pretty? Why does Barbie come with slime now? Not saying it needs to be a gendered toy, but make it gross! It IS gross. It's gross when it falls onto the living room carpet because you weren't supposed to play with it in there, and your mom made you pick the dried up slime when it's at its most disgusting. Now you add freaking glitter and sprinkles to it. That's really gross.

I had pretty much all of these. For the Monster Lab, I didn't like the fact that you were supposed to just pour the sizzled flesh down the drain and buy more when you ran out, so I I put a coffee filter in a strainer and reused it again and again. Which had the added bonus of a more vigorous reaction, since there was already some leftover powder in the flesh from the first run!

I had both the dissect an alien and monster lab, now I know how to cut up a chicken, or maybe that was working for Boston Market, but yeah I never did anything weird because of science toys.

Ahhhh Halloween…the most wonderful time of the year!!! F13th, Halloween and NoEs marathon…also got to watch The Monster Squad and who can forget, David S. Pumpkins!!! 🎃 🧟‍♂️🕸…

My parents were not put off by these. I had the Monster Lab, Alien Dissection, and one of the mini monster molds/living ice sets.
The lab was one of my top favorite toys! My parents and uncle were not only cool with it, they happily videotaped one of my monster-dissolving experiments.

I really liked the monster lab, but the dissolving flesh wasn’t reusable, so it seemed like I would have to re-up the supply. That made it a no-go. Also mom’s biggest problem with any slime toy was the fear it would get in the carpet, not that it was the psychology harmful work of Satanists at Mattel 😂.

I didn't see these being advertised or sold in my area as a kid, but man I wish I had owned them. I'm in my 40s and I really want to melt the flesh off some monsters now.

  14. @YodaPagoda

    October 14, 2026 at 9:30 pm

One of my friends got the Mad Scientist Lab where you boiled the flesh off a monster's bones. It was pretty awesome, and never got one myself because my mom wouldn't buy one for me. I never saw a "Dissect an Alien" out in the wild, it might've well have been an urban legend for all I knew before I saw this video!

Well, to be fair boiling monsters isn't exactly good ethics. Have you played Undertale? They could be chill cool monsters and boiling them perpetuates anti monster racism and monster genocide.

Pulling guts out of aliens? I'm sure that contributes to why aliens don't talk to us. I wouldn't want to talk to aliens that think it's ok to pull the guts out of humans.
