I stick to 3 rules when I shop on Amazon: (1) never buy Amazon brand; (2) never buy “sponsored”; and never buy the brands whose name I cannot pronounce (i.e. some generic/knock-off Chinese brands from which Amazon brands are sourced). I’m willing to pay more by sticking to these rules.

A couple of years ago, while looking at my bank statements, I realised that Amazon was taking a monthly amount for "Prime". During the period they had been doing it – almost a year, I had not bought anything from them. I cancelled the payment and got refund of what they had taken. That was a couple of years back, but this year, when I was looking for Christmas presents, I found what I was looking for, and only realised after ordering it, that it was from Amazon. I tried to cancel it, but it had already been posted (super-fast!), so I withdrew the cancellation, and actually ordered another, which also came quickly – so I'm able to use Amazon without paying any monthly subscription. I can only conclude that anybody who is paying it, doesn't need to.

Beware buying Christmas presents at Amazon – my gift for my daughter arrived today in its cellophane-wrapped presentation box, just with my name and address stuck on with a sticky label, so that when it came through the door, it was completely explicit what was inside it. Sheesh! Also, I won't be able to wrap it unless I take the cellophane off, to get rid of the address label.

So what? Just use a little brain power and search carefully. I remember all the panicked forecasts that Walmart would be the only store left. And then came Amazon. At some point, Amazon will be left behind by something new. Meanwhile, be smart when shopping.

Amazon is not actually making these. They'll just commission Chinese companies to produce these products, or have them rebrand something they had already been producing. Sometimes in your order history you may find products by Chinese brands you've bought, that are now "Amazon Basics" or "by Amazon". They even stated so in an introductory video a few years ago.

December 14, 2025 at 3:49 pm
Sponsorship is 50/50. Personally, I don't care if its the top rated, best seller, most endorsed, blah blah blah…I AM SKIPPING ALL SPONSORED ITEMS and going right to the start of the actual listings. So while someone can pay to appear higher, it means absolutely nothing in terms of how their product actually performs.

And? This has been the case for many things and if you are happy with a lower quality, maybe cheaper or maybe not product, maybe with worse or lower feedback because you are too lazy to look at more than the top product on the page you’ve already made your choice.
Be lazy and get crap

Amazon and Apple share a common trait: they both tend to push consumers toward purchasing their products. This pressure is exactly why I've chosen to steer clear of Apple devices. Their approach just doesn't align with my values as a consumer.

As soon as I see Amazon choice or a sponsor I search a bunch more until I can confirm this one probably is the best one. Amazon forgets that some of us actually prefer going into stores but sadly we can't find those items anymore because Amazon killed the niche businesses so we have to REALLY look into reviews, as soon as it looks like a bot or a paid review e.g. "I haven't opened this yet but looks good 5*" my eyes roll and I skip, I can't even impluse buy something I've been really interested in online these days because almost everything seems off.
