The Rolling Stones: ‘Undercover’ | Is it Really that Bad?

Classic Album Review | March 3, 2026

Undercover by the Rolling Stones is considered by many to be one of their weakest albums, in this video I challenge that.

I got Exile on Main Street and it's outstanding! The only Stones album I like better is Hot Rocks. Then I listened to several tracks from goatshead slop and not only didn't get that but 0 Stones albums since, Don't need it don't want it!

Old time Stones fan here. I remember being surprised by this album when it came out, but it was a tremendous new step for the band. They did remain relevant with this record, given how the decade of the 80's was starting to unfold. Like you, I'd love to see a deluxe treatment of the album. From bootlegs (including the Fully Finished Studio Outtakes), we have some great numbers that didn't make the cut but dearly deserve to see the light of day.
This album, as it is, is a win for the Stones. Tougher times in the mid-80's were up ahead for them, but this album is always worth a visit for me.
I love your analysis and I agree. Keep up the great work.

I always loved this album. I was 11 years old when it came out and it made an impression on me watching the video to 'undercover of the night' which is an amazing song. There are some great bangers on this record….'she was hot' is a great nod to their Rock n Roll roots. Maybe 'all the way down' and ' feel on baby' are the more lukewarm tunes on the album for me. I think it was a mediocre success because they didn't tour behind it and by 1983 they were starting to be old and irrelevant to a new generation of kids that loved Duran Duran and Micheal Jackson. So it isn't an album that made it's mark because it was probably mostly hard core Stones fans that bought it.

I find all the Rolling Stones’ records from the 1980s on have some hit and miss tracks. However, I would have to say all their later albums have at least two or four, maybe even five or six tracks on some, that are really great and make them worth while, and worth following the band.

I bought the LP when it first came out back in the day. I loved it! And I still love it! My favorite cut is "Too Much Blood." (The various remixes of "Too Much Blood" are excellent, too.)

I never liked this album until i picked up an original vinyl copy about 5 years ago. It made me reinvent my opinion of it. One thing i do wonder is would the album be better remembered if they'd toured it in the way they did with TY? Obviously that wasn't ever going to happen. Great video as always

I am a huge Stones' fan and I think that Undercover is their second best album released after their 4 great masterpieces concluding with Exile on Main Street in 72.
I don't think you ever knew
    Just what you'd bitten off
But in the end you spat me out
You could not chew me up
    I'm too tough
